There are many You Tube spin-offs of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” but the one causing the biggest stir is a video of 7 year old girls “dancing” to it. The Huffington Post first posted the video and since then it has gone viral.
The video is from the World of Dance Competition in Pomona, California that occurred this past April. The girls are wearing bikini tops and hot pants and are lip-syncing to the song.
Is this appropriate? Would you allow your child to participate in a routine like this?

Watching this video had me clutching my pearls. Call me old fashion.
It’s just sad when some people in our sociey thinks that’s okay.
I agree, Darlene. Apparently their parents thought there was nothing wrong with it and somewhere I read that they never intended for their dance to go onto You Tube and get over 2 million hits. My thoughts are that people have to understand that is how today’s world is and to not put yourself or you child out there unless you are willing for it to be seen on some form of media. This was at a dance competition and they had to have know people would be video taping it.
Regardless of whether it was intended for You Tube or not, it still was inappropriate.
Can I ask, at what age do you think a dance with this type of clothing would be appropriate?
Are these kids are training to be pro dancers? I have no idea. I think the costumes are inappropriate if they’re going to be gyrating. They are similar to other costumes I have seen. It doesn’t take a lot skill of to pump your hips and arms and should have had different moves in the dance. One of my kids went to an arts school. I don’t ever remember seeing such a sexy dance. It wouldn’t have been allowed. From the song selection to the steps, sex is the point of this routine and it was a mistake.
Absolutely NOT!!!
OMG…saw this on television the other night. What parents in their right mind would allow even their 12-year-old daughters to do this..let alone 7-year-olds?
The parents and the organizers of this event should be arrested and charged.
Call me old but that was just inappropriate. Kids are growing up way too fast. Be 7 for a while.
Can I ask, at what age do you think a dance with this type of clothing would be appropriate?
The dancing (in less scanty costumes) maybe 15 or 16? The dancing + costumes seem firmly adult to me – if you’re over 18 and you want to do that, it’s your body.
The whole combination of the dancing, the song and the outfits on girls that young = a mindblowingly bad idea. I don’t get all pearl-clutching over the YouTube aspect and pedophiles, etc. – it’s just that I don’t think little girls should be sexualized in that way, regardless of who is seeing it. It’s one thing to play dress up with heels and make-up, but this is just too extreme and fast for young children.
Those outfits are mind boggling. Why would you let your child dress that way? Not to mention some of those dance moves? My little girl is about to turn 7 and I would never allow any of that. If I did temporarily lose my mind and think it was fine, I can ssure you my husband would put a speedy end to it. Look at what they are teaching those young girls about themselves. What are they thinking?
This is horrible. I understand dance and gymnastics. I get it. However, the pelvis grinding and near-nakedness is disgusting. They were thrusting. They could have been dressed in a one piece and had some of the moves cut. Apparently, all the adults involved belong to the cult of celebrity. I heard that it was copied from Alvin and the Chipmunks movie but we all know it was a Beyonce hit first. Beyonce had more clothes on ! By the way,I am not a fan of cheerleading for young girls either. I think it brings out the worst in them.
Wow, they are good little dancer’s! But the clothes, the moves , the song not appropriate for kid’s. What is with this trend to make kid’s appear older than they are?
Samantha,
I would never allow any of that. If I did temporarily lose my mind and think it was fine, I can assure you my husband would put a speedy end to it. Look at what they are teaching those young girls about themselves. What are they thinking?
I totally agree! If it was one of our girls, my husband would be the dad on stage putting a coat on her & removing her from the stage ;0
They are very talented 7 yr olds, that obviously worked very hard. It is a shame that the adults in their lives don’t have any common sense.
So wrong.
That’s it, Nancy. The parents can put any spin on it they want, but it is just WRONG.
I attempt to keep an open mind and consider myself to have liberal leanings.
But this is WAYYYY to much. Guess I’m old-fashioned but children should not be performing in this manner.
JMO
Good grief. I didn’t watch much. I had enough.
My daughter danced in a swan lake costume when she was 7.
When is this appropriate? 27? My oldest is 16 and she’s still too young, I know that.
If these girls danced and dressed the same way and were over 18 and the men watching them were over 18 …the only purpose would be to titillate them and get some type of rise or reaction out of them. These parents are disgusting and pitiful.
It’s never appropriate – this is depressing to me!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! what the heck where there mother thinking! sigh…. its a sad sad day indeed when this is what the world has come too i have a 6 yr old and omg i couldnt even fathom letting anything like that sigh…… those little i repeat LITTLE GIRLS will be in my prayers tonight and i will through a prayer in for there parents that they will find there heads SOON!!!!!!!!
everyone wears sexy dance costumes when it comes to routines and performances. i think its awsome that their learning how to dance so good at such a young age. If they wanna become big than their on there way.. good for them. people need to stop seeing it as inappropriate thats just what dancing consists of now days this is 2010!!
It’s creepy and unnatural.
7 year old girls don’t need to dress and dance sexual to prove they have talent. It’s inappropriate for 7 year old girls to believe they have to show skin and dance in a way to be popular because it’s 2010 so we should accept it.
Darlene, ita.

Nope. Not true. I’ve been to many dance recitals and I have never, ever seen anything like this.
MOre or less i under where everyones coming from when they speak on the customes of the young girls (NO) they shouldnt had been dresssed Down as much aS they where . Im 16 ive had dance recitals myself where we had too wear a certain outfit Depending on the theme. But for people too start striking the dancing of these little girls is wrong there dancing is something there passionate about and Damn well good at too be 7 and 8 years of age. you never steal anyones passion espically not a childs the comments that where made about them where simply reacted off of there lack of clothing in that point of time when these lil girls where being preped for this competion it was the job of the parents too STOP and take a look at there daughters if they had they wouldve clearly seen that the outfits where made for some one older and no parents shouldnt allow there children espically daughters at this young age dress like that. For those people who keep claiming that the song was wrong and the dancing was wrong theres a million children dancing too hip hop music written by artist like beyonce herself. & if thats the case then no songs are made for young children to dance too.
Ps. if anyones ever watched Beyonce’s single ladies video, She Was a tad bit more covered up then those lil girls.
I am a survivor of sexual child abuse, I’m 20 years old, and this video simply makes me want to weep. Those little girls don’t know the danger that their naive parents have put them in. In fact, they just like to play dress-up and dance to a popular song that is “cool.” This is tragic.
Hi Elaine and welcome to Imperfect Women,
Thank you for your comment and sharing with us your thoughts and perspective on this video. It is sad in my eyes also.
I would also like to tell you how sorry I am that you have had to endure sexual child abuse and my hope is that you have things in place now to help you heal and move forward so that you can have an emotionally healthy adult life. Good luck to you.
they are great dont get me wrong i would never wear that and im 13… red and black are not the colors 7/8 yr old girls should be wearing….i am astonished… i think the parents did noy know what the coroigraphy for this dance because no mother in their right mind would let their pop, dip ,.etc. + in the clothes i like the outfit but the colors are too adultish….
I had seen this many months ago and just shook my head. I guess maybe the parent or parents should have never posted it in the first place but the dance instructor is at fault. I guess these 7 years olds don’t go to the zoo.
Hi Elaine and welcome.
