A New Year’s Toast
….and so the year has resigned
and we accept the cleanness of a new one…
May the regrets we have had in the year that passed,
teach us lessons we never had the chance to learn.
May the disappointments we have endured,
be a discovery into strength we never knew we had.
May the failed attempts that left us frustrated,
give us focus and conviction to try again.
Because this year we will be wiser
and will learn more lessons.
Because this year we will know we have the strength
to deal with any disappointment.
Because this year we have another opportunity
to succeed in our attempts.
…and so I raise my glass to the year before us,
That we will learn more lessons,
Have confidence in our strength,
And acknowledge all our successes.

I was at a New Year’s Eve wedding and the toast ended, “May tonight be the worst night of your marriage!”

2009 was a test of my family’s strength for sure. The landscape of my family was changed forever with the death of my nephew. We truly did discover a strength that we never knew we had.
The message that I take from your toast is that life is a combination of good and bad and we should appreciate the good and if we have had bad experiences, we need to keep moving forward. Face the New Year with hope.

Pam, I am so sorry for you and your family’s loss. This poem was written with a lot of emotion and tears of acceptance. Although each line of the poem is universal-they have great personal meaning for me. I’m glad that my words may have comforted you in some way.

Have confidence in our strength,
And acknowledge all our successes.
I like it all and this part jumped at me. It’s a good thing to take some time and give yourself some credit. We get so caught up in responsibility that we forget to congratulate ourselves on things we have done well. It’s important to remember our worth and build on our accomplishments.
Pam and others who survived losses in 2009 have been on my mind. I know a lot of folks have dealt with both small and big disappointments this year.
I hope 2010 provides a new beginning, although I know what happened in the previous year is not meant to be forgotten.
