PG for scary situations, scary images, fantasy action violence and a smoking caterpillar
When I heard that Tim Burton was going to be directing a new version of Alice in Wonderland, I thought “it’s about time!” The usual players are all present: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Danny Elfman. There are few new faces to the Burton world like Anne Hathaway, as well as some new voices (welcome Alan Rickman!) Lots of CGI, over the top make up and costuming, mind-blowing backdrops, sets and special effects. Everything you’ve come to expect from a Tim Burton movie and so much more.
So, did it live up to the hype? In one word: YES!!
It is Spectacular. Wonderful. Amazing.
It is also dark and scary. My five year old spent a good chunk of the movie snuggled up to me clutching her blankie and stuffed penguin.
We saw it in 3D and there were a few points where the soaring, zooming and falling were a little “too” much, we got a bit dizzy and had to look away for a few seconds. I’ve heard reviews that said this is just as good in 2D, so for anyone bothered by 3D effects that is also a good option.
The girl who places Alice did an amazing job! She is in nearly every scene and she is a wonderful actress. Just really superb and I can’t say enough positive things about her! It’s a shame that the marketing campaign has almost totally ignored her. You’d think Johnny Depp was the star with the way the trailers, posters and overall promos have run. He’s in less than half the movie. And while we’re on the subject…
… Johnny Depp as the mad hatter. He’s jumped the shark. It was too over the top. At times, he seemed to be channelling Willy Wonka with a dash of Braveheart. He just went too far and it almost feels as though he’s run out of characters and is now just recycling ones he’s already done but in different make up. It was distracting. He almost took away from the scenes he was in. I love that he’s will to do ANYTHING, but it just fel like he was trying too hard to be zany, out there, weird, strange. A cartoon character. Thanks, but we already have Jim Carrey.
To go in the other direction, Helena Bonham Carter just seems to get better and better. She plays the big headed Queen of Hearts and she is wonderfully brilliant. She plays a larger than life, over the top, power hungry Queen almost low key. The things that don’t work with Depp’s interpretation are exactly what work with Carter. He should take a lot of notes – she is doing everything RIGHT. She is quite possibly my favorite character!
My overall review: you have to see this one. In the theater. See it in 3D if you can and don’t hate the format. Not really for small children, but the tween crowd will LOVE it! Burton does it again (that’s a good thing!)

Thanks for the review! I’ve been looking forward to seeing this one.
Too bad about Depp. He’s a great actor, and I actually liked him as Willy Wonka, but I can see him taking it too far…
I have never liked Tim Burton’s work. Instead of looking fun and “Fantastical”- his work looks plain creepy to me. I will say that the Red Queen cracks me up in the previews that I have seen and I do love 3D. I always enjoy your reviews Tiffany- thanks so much for doing them for us. I can see what you’re saying about Johnny Depp. I loved him in Pirates but not much else.
What parts aren’t for little ones? My 3 year old has her heart set on seeing this movie, but I have heard there are parts that are scary. (keep in mind this is a kid who watches Vampire Diaries, Angel, Ghost Hunters and Supernatural with me…she likes spooky LOL)
I was waiting for this review. I love/hate Johnny Depp myself, and it sounds like this will be a “hate” movie for me. I loved Edward Scissorhands, Gilbert Grape, Secret Window, Corpse Bride, and Pirates of the Caribbean, but only the first movie. He overplayed Jack Sparrow in the others, IMO, and just forget Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Weird Johnny Depp is too much for me.
I do love Helena Bohnam Carter, though. And Tim Burton, mostly.
I loved the movie and I thought Johnny Depp was great! (I didn’t see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)
Craftymomof3- I have heard it about it being scary too. My aunt saw it and definitely thought it wasn’t for little ones. Someone’s head gets lobbed off in one scene, I believe. Based on what your 3-year-old currently enjoys, maybe she would be ok (especially if mom is there to tuck her head into).
“Channelling Willy Wonka with a dash of Braveheart” – love your description. I am going to try and make it to the movies this weekend and see if I agree.
See, I liked Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. Whenever I think of him in that role I remember him telling Mike Teevee that he couldn’t understand him and to stop mumbling whenever the kid would say something obnoxious.
Thanks Tiffany, I can’t wait to see this. I was hoping to take my little one, but I think it will freak her out. She loves Willy Wonka. That one was pretty kid friendly, the melting dolls didn’t even freak her out. I”m hoping to catch Alice this weekend.
I’m a huge Burton fan. I really like Johny Depp too. Burton is so fun and yes, he is dark. Tiffany, don’t forget that Alan Rickman was in Sweeney Todd as the judge. I have seen that one many times. He is so good in everything.
Kind of disappointing about Depp, but I can see how a Burton Mad Hatter would be challenging to change vs some of the Burton characters Depp has done.
Thanks again Tiffany, I look forward to more reviews.
I loved the movie. I am a big Johnny Depp fan but my daughter and I disagreed on how he played his character. She loved it and I thought it was distracting that Jack from Pirates of the Carabbean emerged from time to time in his performance.
