  1. Well, in my line of work (tv and radio broadcasting), I’ve met quite a few. Richard Simmons (who felt like one of those Stretch Armstrong dolls and yes, he was very loud and obnoxious) to Glorida Estefan (who was a real beeyotch!). Probably some of my faves were Tony Danza (of course), Danny Glover (he is a big man, with literally a big face),very nice, but very scary looking , Jon Corbett (Sex & City, My Greeg Wedding…supernice, sexy, fun), The Backstreet Boys (all very nice, but Howie D was very in tune with people around him and asked about people, deflecting the attention off of him), Jack Klugman (super nice), we did a few shows on a boat around Regatta time with Gavin MacLeod (Love Boat)….quick witted, father figure and fun, Robin Williams (probably the funniest guy around).Florence Henderson and all of her tv kids except Jan and Paula Deen (who is exactly what you see on TV).

The music stars I’ve met were all so nice….Christina Aguilera, Stevie Nicks, Rod Stewart (very funny guy!), Jon Bon Jovi are some that I thought were some of the nicest.

  2. The only celebrity I met was Robert Kelker-Kelly back in the late 80’s. My housekeeper/Nanny let me skip school so we could go see him. I think he was on Another World then. I was so excited I got to take my picture with him but I don’t think I have the picture anymore. I did met Kirk Douglas in passing and he commented on how nice the weather was. My sister went to school with Sarah Mclachlan before she was famous. My sister seems to have met all the celebrities in the family. She met Demi Moore when Demi was doing the Scarlet Letter. My sister was trying to get a part as a Native American but the casting crew thought she didn’t look Native American enough. To funny seeing how we’re Native American.

  3. Wow, Theresa! That’s a lot of celebrities…and I am disappointed to hear about Gloria Estefan.

    Ann@IW says:
  4. Theresa, you met the Brady Bunch – Jan? That’s fun. I always like Jack Klugman too.

Darlene, I love Kirk Douglas. He’s one who I have an autograph of in my collection (not in person, just a collection I keep for fun. I haven’t added to it in a long time).

I met Mel Torme’ a long time ago. It was a Christmas performance and I was helping w/the children’s choir that was performing and also part of his set. After the rehearsals and the show, he spent a lot of time signing autographs for the children. It was so sweet, because some of them wanted more than one autograph and he happily acquiesced. He just kept signing program after program for them.

    Lily@IW says:
  5. We were shocked about Gloria, too Ann. She seems so nice on tv. But, she was just downright nasty. And, she’s very short. We were really disapponted in her attitude and behavior. What a letdown.

Lily, we met all the Brady kids, except Jan. The others said she didn’t wish to “tour”with them although they don’t really keep up with her. The other five all keep up with each other and Greg (Barry Williams) said that he and Bobby (Mike Lookinland) and he and Cindy go to each others’ houses for dinner. They were all cool. Cindy even arm wrestled our morning guy.

    Theresa says:
  6. I met Dana Carvey many years ago in Las Vegas. He seemed nice. Quiet. Maybe he was embarrassed that someone recognized him.

A few years ago, I went to a Micheal Douglas and friends celebrity golf game. Micheal Douglas, Kirk Douglas, Katherine Zeta Jones, Haley Joel Osment, Kenny G, Martin Sheen, James Garner. Martin Sheen seemed very nice and funny. James Garner was a lot bigger (fatter) in real life than I thought.

    Teresa E. says:
  7. I’ve interviewed a lot of people during my career as a journalist. Most of them were great; even the “bad” ones at least offered me funny stories.

There’s only been a few negative experiences:
    * I interviewed Nancy Kerrigan by phone in summer 1993 (way before she got bashed in the knee), and she was the dumbest-and-meanest person I’d ever encountered.
    * I came in on my day off to interview the bassist from Blind Melon by phone, back when they were popular, and he said things like how if I was really dedicated to covering music, I’d travel on tour with them, and that I obviously didn’t really care about music at all. Arrogant jerk!
    * Muralist Robert Wyland, who was going to paint whales on the side of a local aquarium. He and his girlfriend were instantly nasty the moment I said something that wasn’t 100% reverent and ass-kissing. I’d asked him to comment on legit news reports that not everyone thought his paintings were appropriate for their buildings. I was very polite and the question was very relevant. (What I should have said was, “What do you say to people who call your paintings ‘tacky’ and don’t want them in their communities?” haha.)
    * I tried to say hello to Steve Jobs after his keynote at Macworld, and he glared at me while one of his heavies (literally about 300 pounds) shoved me away really hard! I’m only 5ft tall–what harm could I have possibly posed?

Now, for (just some of) the nice peeps:
    * Glen Hansard (from the movie Once, who won the Oscar for Best Song for “Falling Slowly”), backstage at a club in Beijing when his band The Frames were playing as part of an Irish-Chinese cultural exchange. (That was one of my “truths” in the other thread!)
    * Florence Henderson, on the phone. I obviously had a bad cold and she was very mom-like and sympathetic.
    * Ted Neely (Jesus Christ, Superstar), who I met after a show, after I’d interviewed him twice by phone. He was very mellow and friendly.
    * Dennis Miller, who I interviewed by phone. He had a rep for being mean and rude to reporters, but I found him very accommodating and talkative. He even called me “astute” at the end!
    * Mister Rogers, who was sick but eventually got to talk to me on the phone, for a story about his show’s anniversary. We had a great discussion about jazz, and at the end he told me I was special :)
    * Marilyn Manson, who had a funny pseudonym I had to ask for when calling his hotel. He was deep-thinking and kind of humble.

    Eydie says:
  8. Well, I’ll never be able to compete with you but one of my truths was that Paul Newman apologized to me. He bumped into me at a Nascar race. My husband had pit passes. He owned one of the race cars and the track was buzzing with excitement becaue he was there. A crowd formed near his team’s motorcoach, and he came up behind us. I did not meet him, but he apologized when he was shoved into me.

    Ann@IW says:
  9. Meeting Barack Obama was one of my truths, but I have absolutely no recollection of it since I was 10 years old.

I met Ernie Banks when I was a kid, because he was the uncle of some kid in my class. I also met Randy Brown when I was a kid, because his son was in my class (I think that was 1st grade).

I don’t think I’ve met anyone else famous…I definitely can’t match any of your stories!

    Jasmin says:
  10. I am so jealous of Edyie and Theresa!!!!! I would love to do that.

I have met a few celebs. Some controversial…..

    Ive met:
Susan Lucci (on the streets of NY, I was in high school…she was great!)
    Jon and Kate Gosselin (hmmm)
    Glenn Beck
and a host of athletes that others would find boring but I love

I’ve met Ed Rendell, Governer of PA (blech)

    I can’t think of anyone else…..

    Erin@IW says:
  11. How could I forget one really special celeb in the sports world. The late and beloved Harry Kalas, Long-time announcer for the Philadelphia Phillies.

This year, we are dedicating the season to him. The players hang one of his suit jackets in the dugout at every game.

    Erin@IW says:
  12. I just read about Pam’s encounter (near-encounter) with Brittany Spears in Gosselin chatter and I can’t wait to read about it!

    Ann@IW says:
  13. I live in Los Angeles. I have had many encounters with celebrities. The majority being my work as an RN in a local well known hospital back in the 80s and early 90s. I really don’t feel like I can say much about that other than I met many very famous people through the years and professionally cared for many.

As a resident of LA I have ran into many also. Farah Fawcett and Ryan O’neil’s son Redmond played baseball with my oldest and they would come to the games. Connie Selleca and Gil Gerard’s son also played basketball with the same son. Billy Idol, Ron Perlman, Gordan Clapp, Chris Atkins and Steve Perry’s children all played little league with my sons and my sons still remain friends with a few of these kids. Ice Cube’s son played football with my son.

Erik Estrada’s son went to the same high school as my son’s and I met him several times. Charlton Heston walked into my office one day looking for the local Junior College. He was lost. Very nice guy. He was speaking about the NRA.

I ran into Ed Anser in a drug store and Halle Berry at a mall when she was just starting to become famous.

Our local high school where I worked for years and where my son’s attended is made of brick and has a very East Coast look. It is used for filming frequently. The high school scenes for Six Feet Under was filmed there and I met several of those actors.

To tell you the truth, I can’t even remember them all. We have lived here for 29 years and it is a pretty common occurrence.

Ann, I was caught in a traffic mess when the paps were chasing Britney and it was not pleasant and could have been very dangerous. My son delivered a pizza to Britney Spears at the height of that craziness and she did not even give him a tip. :(

    Pam@IW says:
  14. No tip = bad celeb. :(

    Ann@IW says:
  15. Teresa E.

Have you had your baby yet?

    Pam@IW says:
  16. Pam, I haven’t. I have about a month left. But thanks for remembering!

    Teresa E. says:
  17. I work in a medical building near Beverly Hills and have met numerous celebs. My favorite story is when I was in the elevator and Tori Spelling and Jason Priestly got on together (this was during the early 90210 days). Tori spent the whole time going down (20 floors) primping while looking at the mirror, never once taking her eyes off herself, while talking to Jason. I glanced at Jason and he rolled his eyes at me with a sheepish look on his face. I chuckled and Tori was oblivious. (She did not look good either.)

    Jeff says:
  18. Have actually met:
    Leann Rymes
The Outfield (Eighties band, does anyone remember them? LOL)
    Artist Dale Chihuly
Author Anne Perry (aka Juliet Hulme played by Kate Winslet in the movie Heavenly Creatures)
    Betty White
Susan Powter (what can I say? I loved “stop the insanity!”)
A few members of the original “Temptations” (sang with them, too!)

    Have seen:
    Minnie Driver
    Michele Lee
    Pope JPII

I know there are more – many I have seen when visiting NYC but I can’t remember! Must think and get back.

    Nancy@IW says:
  19. Wait! I forgot…I was doing the NBC tour at 30 Rockerfeller Plaza and saw part of a SNL rehearsal. Tom Hanks waved at us. Through glass, one flight down from us, not nearly close enough to qualify as “meet, ” but it’s all I can come up with…

    Ann@IW says:
  20. Well…. I literally ran into Tory Aikman a few years ago at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport. I walked right into his chest, looked up and was like #$%#$@! I’m looking at Troy Aikman. He laughed and asked me if I was alright, I nodded and apologized for bumping (running face first) into him.
My father is friends with Robbie Benson (Ice Castles anyone?) and Franklin Graham.
Robbie was the voice of the beast in Disney’s Beauty and The Beast- a couple years ago he gave us a beautiful canopy bed that belonged to his daughter (who had long outgrown it) for our little girl. It’s so ornate and looks very much like a princess bed. She loves knowing it belonged to the
“beast” because Belle is her favorite princess.

    Samantha@IW says:
  21. Sam – that is so funny about you and Troy!
Okay, I thought of some more –
Katie Couric, Matt Lauer and Al Roker at NBC.
Sally Jesse Raphael (remember her? LMAO)
Chef Wolfgang Puck (actually spent over an hour sitting down and chatting – work-related interview) – SUPER DUPER nice guy!
    Rick Bayless
Anna Post and Peggy Post (Emily Post Institute)

    Nancy@IW says:
  22. I think that would be a fabulous dream-come-true for a little girl. The “Beast’s” canopy bed…frilly and fancy. Does it come alive and sing, “Be my guest!”

    Ann@IW says:
  23. Nancy, I love Betty White. She is so funny and good in everything she has done.

Sam, how sweet that Robby Benson is all thoughtful like that. I admire his work and used to have his pic on my wall when I was teenager.

    Lily@IW says:
  24. I met one of the Maytag Repair guys…..(not the current one)…I guess that makes me as sad as the
    Maytag Repair guy :) .

    Wendy says:
  25. Maytag repair guys? I thought there only was one. See? I learn something new here everyday.

    Ann@IW says:
  26. Yes Ann–they are kind of like Lassie :) .

    Wendy says:
  27. Thought you guys would like to hear this. I just talked with a friend who’s girlfriend from high school and daughter went to see Rachael Ray’s talk show. The two of them told her how downright bitchy Rachel Ray really is when the camera light isn’t on. They said she was yelling at people who work for her and being nasty. When the camera light came on she was all happy and peppy. They said they were truly shocked at her beahvior considering she had a live audience watching her act this way. The daughter said it completely turned her off from watching her show anymore. They said she is not nice at all! If that were me, I probably would’ve walked out.

That’s a golden rule everyone should follow, be nice to others. And even a more golden rule of broadcasters, your mic is always on. Another is to be an ambassador of your show/station, whether you’re around one person or the whole audience. Rachael better wise up, just as fast as she rose to the top, she can fall to the bottom.

    Theresa says:
  28. Theresa-
I knew it! I have never been a huge fan of her but for the past couple years I just cant stand her.

    Samantha@IW says:
  29. I sang with Kenny Rogers in the third grade for a Christmas show, he was really nice to us and even brought a puppy out for us to play with backstage.
