While Jon oversees the installation of new cabinets in the kitchen, Kate and the kids get into some fun in the sun at the beach.
In addition to cooking the kids a special breakfast, Kate recreates summer fun for all the kids, allowing them to body paint with pudding yet again, despite her natural desire for cleanliness and order. Soon enough, it’s time to go home, and check out the changes to the kitchen. Will the reveal of the new cabinets and kitchen meet Kate’s expectations?

i honestly cannot wait to see this episode. lol. i love to see remodels and we just did our kitchen and are in the midst of the bathroom remodel. plus i love watching the kids…they are so full of life and fun-loving…the parents must have done something right eh?
I watched most of it. It was cute with the kids on the beach and eating their special breakfast. I think body painting with pudding is gross.
yeah the pudding painting is gross..but less messy than paint paint! lol. i loved the kitchen! very nice.
I was impressed by Kate’s self-awareness when she stated that no matter how much she can do for the kids, she can’t take the place of Jon in their lives. I thought that was a very mature and thoughtful observation.
Jon continues to come off to me as off-putting in interviews – very low energy and unengaged. I’m trying not to be too hard on him, but he’s not making it easy.
There were the usual cute kid moments, but all in all, not the most compelling episode.
Jennie I agree about Jon. I want to see the good father I think he can be but, moments where he says things like, “It’s not a mid-life crisis I’m only 32.” make me cringe.
Paula, I know what you mean.
When I am feeling more generous and am up for doing some analysis via the television – LOL – I wonder if Jon’s father’s death at a relatively young age (early to mid 60′s) weighs on him at all.
That said, Jon doesn’t come off well in his segments.
This episode wasn’t hugely engaging for me. I thought there were a couple of cute Collin moments. The little guy is so earnest.
I liked Kate’s honesty. I understand that many see it as calculated, but I still like her acknowledging that things are very different now and loosening up on some of her over-the-top rules about the kids getting dirty. (That said, I agree about the pudding, Lily – yuck!).
The kitchen remodel? I like some of it, but not all of it. The cabinets seemed to be a lighter color that might show dirt. Hard to tell, however.
Carla is a sweetheart for trying to organize things prior to Kate’s return.
I have to admit, as much as I thought their kitchen before was dated, I kind of hated the new kitchen. I agree Anya, those white cabinets will be dirty and hand printy in no time, and that will drive Kate nuts. Also, it seemed all white to me, but maybe I’m remembering that wrong. White walls, white cabinets, white counters and stainless is too sterile for me. I also hate (from experience) those odd corner cabinets. My sister in law has them and after 10 years they are completely empty because they are a hard shape to use. Also, they had random one or two glass front cabinets, which just seemed stupid and oddly placed. Ick. Although I did really like the center island, talk about the perfect place to spread out and cook.
I just watched this last night. My gosh, that kitchen is gorgeous!
The twins reaction to Jon’s earrings was the best part, I think.
I don’t get the drama about the kitchen remodel. Maybe theirs was expensive, but we just did ours, and in the past 6 years have also done new fences and landscaping, two bathrooms, a new roof, exterior paint, replaced carpets with slate floors in LR DR FR, new furnace and a bunch of other stuff, and it wasn’t all that expensive (or I could not afford it on one income and 4 kids). We did it one bit at a time because of cach flow reasons but if I could have afforded to we’d have done it ALL before we ever moved in.
I’m surprised they moved into a home with a kitchen that did not work for them – most people would do the remodel before moving in and I wonder if TLC decided they should move in first, so that could be an episode, then do the remodel, so THAT could be an episode, which is a real butt pain – if you can afford the remo why not do it BEFORE you move in which any contractor would advise you to do.
Why make Kate pack up and drag the kids out, have the twins miss school, get sent back, etc, etc, etc when they could have simply had the kitchen done before they took occupancy? I hardly believe that is the way that wealthy people like Gosselins would choose to do things if TLC and the production schedule weren’t calling the shots. Same with the “green” solar panels. Any reason why that should be done with 8 children wandering around a construction zone rather than having it done prior to move in?
TLC schedule I would imagine and wanting to have everything part of the show is a real inconvenience for Kate.
And I’d be darned if i’d let someone “surprise” me with a new kitchen – I’d want to be there every step of the way making decisions since I’m the one who has to make or supervise making of three meals a day for the next ten years+ as my kids get old enough to move out to college. And I’m not OCD. But if I’m going to deal with a remo I want it to work for me, to go to my taste and the way I handle meals.
I think all this TLC funded stuff, and the freebies, are a mixed blessing for kate. I bet if she had her druthers she druther have hired a designer and let them do it priot to move in, without the stupid scrubbing of an old fridge for 4 hours, so TLC could “capture” all that, knowing damn well that stuff was on its way out! Why even pretend that she has to deal with that, and put the kids in a house with contractors dropping boards on peopel’s heads, when it could all be handled so much more sensiblY?
Sadstate, I am lol-ing at that last paragraph ! Yeah, it is a mixed blessing…the famiy job. My understanding about the kitchen is that it was free in exchange for advertising, and it was offered in January after they alreday had moved in. Too late to do before the move. I like your idea better though. This made me think back to the Decemberish move. What happened to the furniture advertising show? Did I miss an episode? Didn’t Lane furniture let them pick out a few rooms worth? Does anybody remember?
We haven’t seen as much of the inside of the home as I’d like to! I’m not sure what furniture Lane has, and I’d certainly look – why not – but if I could afford it I’d go Ethan Allen all the way, and they can afford it. But if they can get something they like for free, at least for the kids’ bedrooms and such, why not. For my own room and the living room I would want sumptuous EA. I love their stuff and can’t afford it now!
I’d love to see how she has decorated the home and what her taste is in other rooms, fingerprints or no fingerprints I LOVE a white kitchen have always had a white kitchen (cabinets at least) and love that she didn’t go cherry cabinets and grey /black marble counters like everyone else in the free world but me, apparently. Kitchens shuold be bright and cheery and you’ve got to paint the walls yellow! IMO!
I do think that showing people too much about your house can be not a good idea. Just saw an episode of Law and Order I think it was, based on the New Year’s murders in Richmond a few years back- the people had shown the inside of their home on a real estate video doing virtual tours, as they were selling the home, and someone found out exactly where they lived, what the layout was etc. And used that info to get in- of course and terrible things ensued.
I guess between our desire to see the house and the safety and privacy of the family, it’s probably good that they don’t show too many details. I would be creeped out living away from all the neighbors anyhow, with everyone knowing your family and how much money you make, Jon saying Kate keeps $XXX amount of money in the house was really stupid too. I’ve only seen the one show where they take Kate to do her b-day cake, that sort of shows the kids in the front room or family room just briefly as she walks thru the house and it looks nice. I wouldn’t know Lane furniture from a hole in the head tho so don’t know what I was looking at.
