I don’t really like year end lists because I find that they often come up with categories that aren’t relevant to me (best new artist? I still listen to Neil Young) or that the categories are too rigid. I thought I’d do a random list of some of the highlights of 2009 for me; feel free to respond in the comments and add categories of your own:
Best films I saw in the theater: Revolutionary Road (a 2008 release), Sunshine Cleaning, The Hangover
Best books I read: Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, White Teeth by Zadie Smith, Not Lost Forever by Carmina Salcido, Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen (obviously, only the Salcido book is a 2009 release)
Best TV comedies: 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation
Best TV dramas: Big Love and Mad Men
Favorite song: “Intervention” by Arcade Fire (a 2007 song but I just discovered it)
Favorite gadget: My iPhone! Okay, I got this for Christmas 2008, but in my defense the vast majority of use I’ve gotten out of it (and fun things I’ve discovered it can do) has been in 2009. I love it!
Favorite news story: the sucessful landing of the airplane in the Hudson River. Rarely do happy endings on such a large scale make the news.
Favorite political development: a Democrat in the White House for the first time in 8 years. Obama’s was not my primary choice (Clinton was), and I’m not rah-rah over him the way some people are (or were). But as a Democrat, I am happy to have one of my own back in power.
What about you? What were your highlights of 2009?

Jennie,
I’d like to second your vote of Best TV Comedies. I LOVE 30 Rock. Parks and Recreation really has grown on me, too. Add The Office to the night and Thursday night really was “Must See TV” for me.
Best Reality Show: So You Think You Can Dance? I love the judges, dancers, and choreographers. This show interested 4/5 of our family, too.
Best Book I Read This Year: At Lily’s suggestion (last year) I read Mockingbird this year. I loved it, and reread To Kill a Mockingbird and Capote as a result. As an Austen fan, I am happy to see that you enjoyed S&S Jennie. Try Persuasion next. My daughter received that and Emma from Santa.
Best Personal Developments: I am a dog-owner again (sort of.) My daughter talked us into a puppy, so she’s actually the owner. We can’t believe how lovely the pup is. I’ll follow that up with my husband’s new job that lets us stay where we are, close to family.

2009 saw a particularly bitter loss for us personally, as it has for others, I know. But all in all, it’s been a nice year.
Okay, this is hard for me, but I’m afraid my highlights would not be from this year. I just don’t think in terms like that.
Obama’s inauguration was momentous. It was nice to see the youth so excited about change.
I love 30rock too. I wanted to love Parks and Recreation, because I like Amy Poehler. I think she needs a better show. I am sad to see the end of King Of The Hill, but without Brittany Murphy, it wouldn’t be the same anyway.
Ann, congrats on the new addition to your family. That is one of ours too. We got our new puppy in May and I’m happy about it every day. I just love him and he makes my little one so happy. Just thrilled for your family, she is a lucky pup.
My favorite gadget is cutting it close because it was a Christmas present last year. I love my one-touch can opener. It’s so small and easy to use.

Of course! Me too.
2009 was a good year. I am still under-debt from my divorce, but I see the light. It’s been a dig so it’s nice to get towards the end of it. It’s a been a bumpy one for a lot of my friends, and I’m grateful we’re all still doing okay.
Best comedy on TV is The Office however I would like to say that I am loving Men of a Certain Age on TNT. So far this show has been fantastic. My husband loves it too.
Pam, I have heard good things about “Men of a Certain Age.” I will be checking that out.

Best TV comedies: “Parks and Recreation”, “Modern Family”
Best TV dramas: “Mad Men”!!!!
Best TV Reality shows: “Kate Plus 8,” “Dancing with the Stars”
Favorite song: “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga. Also, “Love Story” from Taylor Swift (even though it came out late 2008). I really need to pay more attention to NEW music….
Favorite news story: An African-American elected to the White House.
Lily, so glad you are seeing the light.
Happy 2010 to all my Imperfect Women!!!!

Fave gadget: my blackberry- never without IW
Favorite books of the year: The Help and Handle with Care. I read a lot so hard to pick just two.
Favorite shows: Dexter, Big Love, and Weeds.
Favorite song: Another tough one…hmm…probably have to pick Fireflies by Owl City. Love them!
And can’t forget the most memorable little girl I found for my Christmas song-of-the-day. If you haven’t heard this 7-year-0ld girl, Rhema Marvanne, you must go and take a listen. Brought tears to my eyes.
Favorite gadget: My Kindle!
2009 brought a new member to our family, and took one from us. It was a bitter-sweet year. If you want to know what I learned, take a peek at my blog about the year.
