Five Books

by Jennie

I’m always wishing I had more time for reading. I try to plan reading time sometimes; if I have a day off I’ll tell myself that I’m going to do nothing but read all day. It doesn’t usually pan out, though – real life has a way of intruding, with its errands, crisises, and the occasional unplanned nap.

Ivy: The Story of a Friendship

How is everyone coming along with the book? Are we ready to discuss yet? I am going to move Anya’s questions in the comment section of the previous thread to this main post.

Recognizing that people are at different stages of reading, I thought I would start with a few basic questions for our readers:

Books Make A Great Gift

By Pam

My husband has always been easy to buy gifts for at Christmas time. He always has a long list of books he wants to read- or he’s happy with a gift card from the local book store. The first year he asked for a book store gift card, I wasn’t keen on the idea. I felt like that was not much of a unique gift. He explained to me that having a gift card gave him a certain sense of freedom to go crazy in the book store and purchase books he might not buy on his own.

Book Review: Not Lost Forever by Carmina Salcido

By Jennie

Like many Bay Area residents, I have never forgotten the awful events that occurred in April 1989 in the Sonoma County wine country. Winery worker Ramon Salcido went on a rampage, shooting two co-workers (killing one), shooting his wife to death, and slashing to death his mother-in-law and his wife’s two young sisters, ages 8 and 12. Salcido’s three young daughters were missing for 36 hours before they were found in a Petaluma garbage dump. Four-year-old Sofia and one-year-old Teresa were dead, but by some miracle two-year-old Carmina had survived her throat being cut. She told rescuers, “Daddy cut me.”

Childhood Favorites

By Jennie

I love to read; I have for as long as I can remember. I still recall, for some reason, a lazy Saturday I spent sitting in a rocking chair in our living room, eating cottage cheese and reading Edward Eager’s Half-Magic, though it occurred more than 30 (!) years ago at this point. I also vividly remember my first reading of Madeline L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time.
