Paranormal Activity: To See Or Not To See?

Written by Tiffany

Opened October 2, 2009 | Runtime:1 hr. 39 min. R: For language

I’ll tell you upfront, I’m a horror movie junkie. I grew up watching the black and white B movies with my dad on Saturday afternoons. Jason, Freddie and Michael Myers are as much a part of my childhood as Bambi, Cinderella and Julie Andrews.

Where The Wild Things Are

Written by Tiffany

Opened October 16, 2009 | Runtime:1 hr. 34 min.
PG: mild thematic elements, some adventure action and brief language

From the moment the opening credits roll, you know this is Max’s movie. His perspective and his story to tell. Just like the book, this isn’t a happy go lucky fairy-tale of childhood innocence and wonderment. Max’s world isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. He is sad, lonely, confused and yes, angry. This isn’t just shown in his out of control behavior and soulful eyes; but also in the bleak greyness throughout the movie. There are no bright colors here. No cat in a red-striped hat. They got the spirit and tone of the book spot on!

MARION ROSS: STILL LIVING THOSE HAPPY DAYS, 25 Years later

MARION ROSS: STILL LIVING THOSE HAPPY DAYS, 25 Years later

Courtesy of Crown Features Syndicate£ & The Hallmark Channel

For those who remember, it’s rather incomprehensible to realize that the classic comedy series “Happy Days” has now been off the air for precisely a quarter-century, having departed the prime time schedule in 1984. But Marion Ross remembers those 11 seasons in which she portrayed Marion “Mrs. C.” Cunningham as if it were the proverbial yesterday.

Ponyo: Miyazaki’s “Wilco The Album”?

Written by Eydie

If Japanese animation sensei Hayao Miyazaki was a band, his latest movie, Ponyo, would be his super-moderate CD after an oeuvre of lush orchestrations, clever recording manipulations, and experimental minimalism. Kind of like what folks are saying about Wilco’s new album, titled Wilco (The Album).

Movie Review – District 9’s Humans Are The Monsters

Written by Eydie

District 9 is Schindler’s List meets Alien Nation. The Peter Jackson-produced film, by freshman director Neill Blomkamp, is only about aliens and big spaceships on the surface. In reality, it’s a bleak study at the way humans, acting in fear, treat those who are different from themselves–and, just like in real life, how those who were once victims of xenophobia easily become perpetrators.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Succeeds Thanks To Its Differences

Written by Eydie

What’s a director to do when the big, shocking climax of the movie is already known by everyone who’d want to see it?

Movie Review- (500) Days of Summer

Written by Jennie

To call (500) Days of Summer a romantic comedy may be slightly misleading; after all, very early in the film, the narrator warns the viewer: “This is not a love story.” Though that in itself is not exactly true; it is the story of how Tom falls in love with Summer, but Summer doesn’t love him back, at least not enough, and breaks up with him, breaking his heart.

SOMEONE TELL ROMEO THAT JULIET’S ONLY SLEEPING!

Written by Jennie

Recently I listened to two friends have a conversation/argument over whether Jack from “Titanic” could have survived if Rose had shared her little raft with him when they were in the water waiting to be rescued. One argued that it was at least possible that he *might* have. The other insisted that it would’ve only led to both of their deaths; they would’ve each had to be at least partly in the water, which would have quickly led to hypothermia and death.

LAND OF THE LOST COMEDIAN

Written by Erin

There used to be a day when I looked forward to a good Will Ferrell movie. Lately, the only thing I look forward to in his movies are the closing credits. There is a fine line between stupid humor and just plain dumb. Will Ferrell’s version of stupid humor was genius. Now it desperately reaches.
