Ordinary Days

Written by Gwen Morrison

Raising our family, my husband and I were able to gather all 4 kids around the kitchen table most evenings for a sit-down family dinner. We rarely zipped through fast food lanes, or ate dinner in front of the TV. With four busy kids, our calendars were full, but somehow, miraculously, 9 times out of 10, we shared an evening meal together. Everyone talked over each other as bowls were passed and countless glasses of milk were spilled. With four unique children (oh, how they are different!), with four very distinct likes and dislikes, there was plenty of grumbling around the table about the menu of the day. It was loud and chaotic. And at the time I had no idea how much I would miss it.

Amazing Women: Jessica Mitford

By Jennie

I first became obsessed with the Mitford sisters in 2001, when I read the enormously compelling and entertaining biography, The Sisters: the Saga of the Mitford Family by Mary S. Lovell. I had been aware of Jessica Mitford as a local (she lived in Oakland, CA for many years) and a muckraking journalist (famous for her expose of the funeral industry, The American Way of Death), but I had no idea that she came from this scandalous, brilliant and eccentric British family who were somewhat famous (or perhaps infamous) in England during the 20th century.

Lost, Stuck and Confused

By Kari

Here I go, dipping into another sort of self-revelation. A journey for me to figure out who I am and what is it I am put on this earth to be.

Hi, my name is Kari. I’m 28, single and living in Las Vegas. Let me tell you a little about myself before I delve into the main reason why I’m writing this blog. Born in Wisconsin, I had the most wonderful and humble upbringing by two amazing parents and a little brother, who not only pestered me every now and then, but is also one of my best friends. After graduating from college, I found myself going in a direction that I thought was for me, but turns out that gut wrenching feeling in the pit of my stomach thought otherwise. Turns out it was right which led me to a wonderful year working on a cruise ship in Hawaii. After that, I decided that ship life wasn’t for me anymore, and so my boyfriend (ex-boyfriend now) and I packed our bags and headed to Las Vegas. Four years later, here I am, alone with my cat Diezel, and for the first time in my life, I am stuck!

WINTER

WINTER

By Emil Schmit

Each year, late autumn begins dropping hints as to what lies ahead. Day by day the cooling temperatures remind us of the coming of winter. Another Midwest winter with all of its snow and cold, its slippery, icy roads, and its cancelled activities and appointments. Winter, with its huge (this year exceptionally huge) home-heating fuel bills. Such weather is really nothing new. We’ve all been there before.

Two Days

By Kimberly Field

STOP EVERYTHING! I want you to think about this one. Here’s the question:

If you had only two days left on this earth, what would you do each day?

Really…STOP…Write it down.

(you are not ill, you are not sad, you accept it’s your time)

OK! I hope you came up with something before you continue to read. If not, please do it now….humor me.

Beauty Of Wisdom

Beauty Of Wisdom

I was introduced to Robbie Kaye’s photojournalism project, Beauty of Wisdom, when I noticed she was following Imperfect Women on Twitter. After visiting her blog and website, I knew I wanted to share this project with our readers here at Imperfect Women. I contacted Robbie and she graciously agreed to be interviewed.

Robbie Kaye traveled throughout the U.S. by car, interviewing and photographing women in their 70’s, 80’s and 90’s at the beauty parlor. Her goal is to widen the perception of beauty in a culture that is primarily focused on the beauty of youth. Her images evoke a new view on aging, shedding light on this almost forgotten generation and preserving ritual and technique and the history that these women have contributed so greatly to.

Best of 2009

By Jennie

I don’t really like year end lists because I find that they often come up with categories that aren’t relevant to me (best new artist? I still listen to Neil Young) or that the categories are too rigid. I thought I’d do a random list of some of the highlights of 2009 for me; feel free to respond in the comments and add categories of your own:

The Christmas Letter

I’m not a big fan of the “Christmas Letter.” I’ve never written one, and I suspect that I never will. And why, you ask? I know you want to know.

YES, VIRGINIA, THERE IS A CHRISTMAS TREE

By Emil

At Christmastime, when I was young, we sang carols and church songs like “Silent Night,” also the lively, jolly “Jingle Bells.” Through the years these were joined by some good new numbers like “I’m Dreaming Of a White Christmas” and “Blue Christmas.” Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” and “The Night Before Christmas” were our standard stories. Later new song-stories came along, including “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “Angie the Christmas Tree Angel” and “Little Drummer Boy.”
