Grandma’s Room

by Gwen Morrison

My daughter has moved back home and is now living in what we have always called “Grandma’s Room.” In the room that we knew, when looking at this house, would be perfect for Dave’s mother who stayed with us here in Atlanta during the winter months.

Is Breasfeeding in Public Still an Issue?!

By Lily

In 1992, a mother was told she could not nurse her baby at a mall in Florida.  She happened to be a writer and wrote an article which caught the attention of a state representative.  He proposed a new law which stripped breastfeeding of being considered indecent.  The bill passed in 1993 and many states followed the example.  Currently, 44 states and the District of Columbia have laws which allow a mother to breastfeed in any public or private location.

April 3, 1974

By Lily

I was 11 years old when the Super Outbreak of tornadoes began on April 3, 1974.  My father and brother stood near our sliding glass doors with their eyes focused on the sky.  I remember the clouds being so low, that I could have touched them from our small hill in the backyard.  On that day and through the next, 148 tornadoes ripped through thirteen states and Winston, Ontario. Towns were devastated and 330 people lost their lives.

How to Host a Virtual Baby Shower

By Anya

Have you ever missed the baby shower of a loved one or treasured friend because you live too far away to attend? Did you feel like you were missing out on all the fun? Did you feel guilty for not being able to personally present your gift? Did you miss the “oohs” and “ahs” of the new mom-to-be as she opened her gifts?

What’s in a Name?

What’s in a Name?

By Jennie

In recent years, when a celebrity has a child, the question usually asked after “boy or girl?” is “what did they name it?” Okay, that’s a common question, even for non-celebrities. But celebrities have gotten a reputation, perhaps undeserved, of being more…adventurous in their choice of baby names than the average American. There’s Audio Science. And Pilot Inspektor (what, because Pilot Inspector was too conventional?). And who could forget Moxie Crimefighter? It’s gotten to the point where the fact that Freddie Prinze and Sarah Michelle Gellar named their recently born daughter Charlotte drew comment. The name, while a bit old-fashioned, struck some commenters as surprisingly sane and normal.

Old Glory – Long, Proudly May She Wave

By Emil Schmit

I remember the Fourth of July in a small Midwestern town. Flags lined both sides of the two block along Main Street. Their wooden staffs fitted into metal sockets that were cast in the concrete, near the edges of the sidewalks. And Old Glory flew proudly and colorfully in the breeze.

Small Town Diners Offer An Element Of Surprise

By Emil Schmit

I am not impressed by big, fancy restaurants where the preparation of food often appears to play second-fiddle to advertising, decorating, and fancy menus, also, reprinting menus to keep ahead of constantly rising prices. Fast food places are usually good and serve the purpose for which they were intended. But they usually lack variety and character.

Sunday Morning

By Kimberly Field

Sunday morning came early for me today – 5:17am to be exact. I woke and rose without a plan or motivation to do the same old Sunday routine – chores to be specific. Heaps of laundry, bathroom horrors, kitchen catastrophes and a 45-minute pickup everything that’s been flung on the floor for a week hard labor before the vacuuming.

On Being Imperfect

By Erin

It is 3:00 on a Tuesday afternoon and I’m waiting in the carpool line at a suburban elementary school. In front of me is a BMW, behind me a Lexus SUV. My car is a Pontiac and the kid I’m waiting for isn’t mine. By all estimations, I’m an outsider.Yet, just being in the presence of all of these moms gives me an overwhelming desire to blend in.

7 Year Old Girls Dance To “Single Ladies”

7 Year Old Girls Dance To “Single Ladies”

There are many You Tube spin-offs of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” but the one causing the biggest stir is a video of 7 year old girls “dancing” to it. The Huffington Post first posted the video and since then it has gone viral.

The video is from the World of Dance Competition in Pomona, California that occurred this past April. The girls are wearing bikini tops and hot pants and are lip-syncing to the song.

Is this appropriate? Would you allow your child to participate in a routine like this?
