Small Town Diners Offer An Element Of Surprise

By Emil Schmit

I am not impressed by big, fancy restaurants where the preparation of food often appears to play second-fiddle to advertising, decorating, and fancy menus, also, reprinting menus to keep ahead of constantly rising prices. Fast food places are usually good and serve the purpose for which they were intended. But they usually lack variety and character.

Sunday Morning

By Kimberly Field

Sunday morning came early for me today – 5:17am to be exact. I woke and rose without a plan or motivation to do the same old Sunday routine – chores to be specific. Heaps of laundry, bathroom horrors, kitchen catastrophes and a 45-minute pickup everything that’s been flung on the floor for a week hard labor before the vacuuming.

On Being Imperfect

By Erin

It is 3:00 on a Tuesday afternoon and I’m waiting in the carpool line at a suburban elementary school. In front of me is a BMW, behind me a Lexus SUV. My car is a Pontiac and the kid I’m waiting for isn’t mine. By all estimations, I’m an outsider.Yet, just being in the presence of all of these moms gives me an overwhelming desire to blend in.

7 Year Old Girls Dance To “Single Ladies”

7 Year Old Girls Dance To “Single Ladies”

There are many You Tube spin-offs of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” but the one causing the biggest stir is a video of 7 year old girls “dancing” to it. The Huffington Post first posted the video and since then it has gone viral.

The video is from the World of Dance Competition in Pomona, California that occurred this past April. The girls are wearing bikini tops and hot pants and are lip-syncing to the song.

Is this appropriate? Would you allow your child to participate in a routine like this?

Chubby Married Cougar Needs Hug

By Amy and Linda

A tale of two friends, a sign and John Mayer

Linda Cohen Kliethermes and Amy Fenster Brown have been best friends since 1st grade when one walked up to the other on the school playground and said “Wanna be friends?” That’s how it worked in those days. They have been by each other’s sides through the illnesses and death of parents, boyfriends, weddings, childbirth — you name it.

Best Laid Plans

Written by Gwen Morrison

I’ve been out of commission the past week, suffering from the worst cold I’ve had in years. When Saturday rolled around, I was also suffering from a severe case of cabin fever. It was a sunny day yesterday, and my husband, who has also been down much of the week with a cold, suggested we jump in the convertible and drive north to the Georgia Outlet stores and walk around. He was probably trying to determine whether or not my limbs still worked, since I’ve been sprawled out on the family room sofa with a box of Kleenex for days, moving only to reach the remote or place my cup of tea back on the coffee table.

A Simple Order

Written by Samantha

I have been craving a Chicken Club wrap from what was one of my favorite restaurants for weeks. I finally made it there last night and the experience was horrible. The wrap comes with marinated chicken, bacon, lettuce, cheese, salsa, avocado, and green chile sauce. I don’t like the last three items……. I have never had a problem ordering this item sans avocado, salsa, or the green sauce. Never. Apparently, there really is a first time for everything.

Springtime

Springtime

By Emil

The older I get, the more I appreciate our Midwest with its four distinct seasons of the year. Maybe that is because I was born and raised here. I can’t really say that I enjoy winter, but I think I would miss it. I am sure I appreciate spring all the more because of it. We often hear that anticipation is at least half the joy of anything. I’m sure that a lot of us begin anticipating spring when the snowdrifts are still “hip-high to a tall…person” (Shucks, there goes another of my favorite old sayings that my politically correct friends won’t let me use anymore).

Ordinary Days

Written by Gwen Morrison

Raising our family, my husband and I were able to gather all 4 kids around the kitchen table most evenings for a sit-down family dinner. We rarely zipped through fast food lanes, or ate dinner in front of the TV. With four busy kids, our calendars were full, but somehow, miraculously, 9 times out of 10, we shared an evening meal together. Everyone talked over each other as bowls were passed and countless glasses of milk were spilled. With four unique children (oh, how they are different!), with four very distinct likes and dislikes, there was plenty of grumbling around the table about the menu of the day. It was loud and chaotic. And at the time I had no idea how much I would miss it.
