Corporal Punishment? In 2010?

By Jennie

I was dumbfounded by a news story I read last week – an Alabama high school punished 18 students for violating the school’s dress code by showing up at the prom in clothes that were deemed too revealing. This isn’t what surprised me – schools certainly have the right to set dress codes for school attendance and school functions. The first thing that surprised me was that the students weren’t turned away from the prom, which seems to me like it would have been the most appropriate and sensible punishment. The students were allowed to attend, but were told that they must choose between a three-day suspension and a paddling as punishment.

By Jennie

A wife in North Carolina has been awarded $9 million in an “alienation of affection” suit against her husband’s mistress. Cynthia Shackelford sued Anne Lundquist under a little-used state statute that allows wronged spouses to recover damages from the “other (wo)man.”

Boy’s 911 Call Saves His Family

A 7-year-old Norwalk, California boy who hid in a locked bathroom and dialed 911 when three gunmen barged into his family’s home is being hailed as a hero and rightfully so. The child hid in the bathroom with his sister and pleaded with the dispatcher to send help. “Bring cops . . . a lot of them! . . . And soldiers too,” the boy said.

Senator Bunning Does The Right Thing

By Jeff

Last week President Obama announced (on TV, of course) that he was blessing and signing new legislation call the PAYGO bill that ordered the House and Senate not to pass any new spending bills without a corresponding cut in another program or a new tax to pay for the cost of the bill. “We must do what every American family and small business does every day. Not spend what they can’t pay for.” (How he could stand there with a straight face and say that with the 14-month spending spree he just approved with borrowed money is beyond me.)

Porn Stars Are Women Too

Gloria Allred got hammered by Judge Jeanine Pirro on The Sean Hannity Show last night and it was a pleasure to watch.

Yesterday Tiger Woods issued an emotional apology on national TV. In Los Angeles, local TV stations followed Woods’ statement with a news conference involving attorney Gloria Allred and one of the golfer’s alleged mistresses. Allred called Woods’ apology “a staged public relations stunt” and “a disgrace.” “I just watched Tiger Woods’ apology on television, and he said that many people believed in him. He also said he wanted to make amends. He did not apologize by name to my client, Veronica, and I ask, why no apology?”

America’s 20 Most Miserable Cities

Forbes released their list of America’s 20 Most Miserable Cities today. Their “Misery Measure” takes into account: “unemployment, taxes (both sales and income), commute times, violent crime and how its pro sports teams have fared over the past two years. We also factored in two indexes put together by Portland, Ore., researcher Bert Sperling that gauge weather and Superfund pollution sites. Lastly we considered corruption based on convictions of public officials in each area as tracked by the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Department of Justice.

We expanded the list of cities under consideration this year to include the 200 largest metro areas (in years past we’ve examined 150) which led to a shuffling in the ranks. Any area with a population of more than 245,000 was eligible.”

Should Cell Phone Use Be Banned While Driving?

I was totally shocked when I was looking around the internet today and saw that many states do not ban cell phone use while driving. I live in California and we have had a ban on cell phone use while driving since July of 2008 and on texting since January of 2009. Cellular News has a list of the states and countries that ban cell phone use.
