My Child, The Grown Up

By Gwen Morrison

My third child turned 18 today. All grown up. In four more years, I will have completed all of my motherly obligations. I’ve changed at least 5000 diapers, baked 77 birthday cakes (not that I’m counting), and kissed away more tears than I could ever count. I’ve sat in the stands of countless sporting events, plays, and school concerts.

“[Nine-year-old daughter Cara] was upset with me because I forgot to sign them up for something at school,” Kate, 35, tells PEOPLE in a new cover story. “I said, ‘Cara, I had a really rough year. This is a new year. You’ve got to give me that. Let’s start over.’ – People Magazine interview with Kate Gosselin, June 7, 2010 issue.

Security Blankets and Fuzzy Friends

Written by Lily

George and Banky- these are my daughter’s comfort items. They have been loved to death….. and then some. Nowadays, they stay at home and await their acknowledgment at bedtime. There was a time when they used to accompany us everywhere.

Graduating Our First

By Ann

Thirteen years. Or is it fifteen? How should I count them off? I think fifteen is more accurate. I should include his two preschool years. There have been fifteen First Days. Fifteen Meet-the-Teacher nights. Fifteen Picture Days. Fifteen years of women and men acting “in loco parentis” during the school day. And soon, we will count off our fifteenth Last Day of School.

On Parenting

By Gwen

My youngest son is dating. My oldest son is married. My daughter has lived on her own for more than 5 years and I have another son who is graduating from high school this year. Three out of four of my children are now driving, have ATM cards, and a job or two. All of them are taller than I am (and have been for many years). And with the demands of school, friends, sporting events, parties, and girlfriends, the two sons that still occupy our Atlanta home are rarely present. When said children are at home, I can find them behind closed bedroom doors, playing Modern Warfare with strangers met through the television (I’m not even willing to understand all of that), or texting, eating, and talking on the home phone at the same time.

IS AYELET WALDMAN A BAD MOTHER?

Written by Anya

You may or may not have heard the name Ayelet Waldman before. Perhaps you know Ms. Waldman as the author of the “Mommy-Track Mysteries.” Or possibly you know her as the wife of Pulitzer Prize winning author Michael Chabon. Or maybe the name Ayelet Waldman rings a bell as the woman who ignited a controversy a few years back when she wrote an essay confiding the following: “If a good mother is one who loves her child more than anyone else in the world, I am not a good mother. I am in fact a bad mother. I love my husband more than I love my children.” You can read the article here.
