Let me share with you the art of makeup that women have ritualized & executed for centuries. I have compiled a list of basic yet important items of makeup that every woman should have in their makeup bag or dressing room basket. I have been a makeup artist for over 20 years, have my own makeup line & have catered to hundreds of models & brides & everyday women, from professional to stay at home moms. Just to get confirmation from real women & go outside of what I as a makeup artist think are necessary items, I conducted a poll & asked what were their must have’s.
* The items most women say they cannot go without
*Foundation/Concealer/Powder- If you only need one of these items or all three they are the starting point of any fresh face. Foundation should always match your neck or chest, so you don’t have to blend any farther than your jawline. Concealer goes on after foundation for areas the foundation didn’t cover. Powder is your finishing touch, to seal & soften your foundation & concealer.
Blush/Bronzer- This item is a must to infuse color into your face. Used on your cheekbones & swept back into the hairline, it makes you glow. Bronzer should be placed anywhere the sun would naturally kiss your face..high points of bone structure. Forehead, nose, cheeks & chin. You can camouflage a full face by brushing along the lower jowl area or a little under chin fullness by applying there as well.
Light color Eyeshadow- This item is necessary for highlighting the bone structure of the eye & drawing light into the area to make eyes more expressive. One with a tiny bit of shimmer will catch the light & bring attention to the contrast of brow bone & crease area.
Neutral Medium Color Shadow- This shadow belongs in & slightly above the crease. Following the shape of the eyebrow & most recessed part of the crease. Attach color from the crease to lash line by filling in a small blended triangle in the outside corner of the eye.
Eyeliner- Use eyeliner to accentuate eye shape as well as make your lashes look like they are coming from a fuller base. Full or fine line depending on your eye size & style will give you the definition you need.
*Mascara- This is the one item most women will not go without. Making lashes longer & fuller is a way of bring natural or dramatic or just finished look & attention to the eyes.
Lip liner- Lip liner defines the shape of your lips. You can make your lips perfectly defined or a little more pouty & help your lipstick or lip gloss stay in place & last much longer with lip liner.
*LipStick/LipGloss- everyone can benefit from a little color or gloss to your lips. Weather it is a natural shade that you can wear everyday with everything or just a hint of moist with a gloss, or if you are one who can wear the deeper colors, lip color is just as important to accentuate as your eyes. These are the two areas most people pay attention to when they see or speak to you.
I give makeup lessons to individuals as well as groups. If you would like individual instruction & help learning what colors & placement are right for you, please contact me.

Do you have suggestion for a person who likes to wear mascara but normally can’t because it gives me styes? Is there a type that is more sensitive?
I need eyeshadow help! I cannot achieve the whole smoky eye look. It looks like I was in a fight every time.
Also- I’m convinced that there is no shade of blush on God’s green earth that looks right on me. Its always too dark, too light, or too pink.
Can you come live with me?
Jen, have you spoken w/your dermatologist about the best mascara to use for sensitive eyes? There are so many different opinions & what works for one person doesn’t seem to work for another. Hands down whatever product you do chose to use- you must replace your mascara every 90 days. Mascara wands harbor bacteria & can definitely lead to infection. My eyes are somewhat sensitive & I personally have luck w/Lancome products.
Samantha- head to the Lancome makeup counter! Ask them to show you how to create the smokey eye. They can show you on one & you can do the other. Good luck!
10 itmes?? I must not be the norm because I don’t like carrying a lot of makeup in my purse. 10 items seems too much. I carry lipgloss, lipstick, coverup stick and pressed powder compact. That’s 4 items and it works for me.
I read once that lining your eyes after 35 years old, only ages a woman. Anybody else hear of that? And, should a woman over 35 wear eyeliner and how? (just top lid, etc)
Wow, that makes perfect sense put the concealer on over the foundation. I’ve been doing it wrong. lol
Three items: mascara, concealer, lip gloss. I could use more, but I have no idea what I am doing. I wish I could get my eyes to look bigger.
I always thought that concealer goes under the foundation also? Hmm.
Has anyone ever used Latisse Lash or know someone who has used it? This is that new medication is used to treat patients with not enough or inadequate eyelashes.

Seriously? I hadn’t heard that. I’m in trouble!
I don’t know if it was growing up in the 80′s, but eyeliner is definitely one of my “have-to-have” items. I do try and put it on lightly.
I think I will head over to the Lancome make-up counter and try and learn how to do a smokey eye. If I could master that, I would be a happy woman. Meet ya there at 5:00 p.m. – ok Samantha?
Great article, Tami! Thanks for the tips.
My must haves:
concealer
light foundation
loose powder
eyeliner
mascara
blush
lip gloss
I have a brow kit (fills in the sparse areas and makes a huge difference in framing your face)
I wear eyeshadow most days- I like peach, or brown, or plum
Anya- I would love to!
Anya, seriously, I read that, but I forget where.
I think it may have been in Woman’s Day magazine? I conciously do not line my bottom lid because of that article.
However, I have seen Carmindy do it to people on What Not to Wear, so I don’t know what to think. I like watching what Carmindy does in the makeovers she does on the show. I think I trust her more than something I read (and forgot where I read it).
I would die without eyeliner. Seriously, I’m pale and blond. I need some definition so I don’t look like an albino.
My “must haves”? If I really had to break it down, it’d probably be lip gloss, eyeliner and powder. But my makeup bag (which comes with me most places) is stuffed with 28 items. This includes: 3 lipsticks, 2 lip glosses, lip liner, lip brush, a blush and brush, eyeliner, mascara, sharpener, brow pencil, brow gel, eyelash curler, brow/eyelash comb, a whole ‘nother set of mini-brushes in a plastic case, powder, a tiny pot of noxzema and some q-tips for fixing smudges, and eight different eyeshadow sets. Probably overkill? In my defense, it’s pretty much all the makeup I own; I have a couple of things that I just couldn’t fit in this makeup bag when I got it, and those are on my dresser. My foundation stays in the bathroom, and I don’t wear concealer (maybe I should?). I’d probably carry more if I could fit it in the bag.
Ladies~
Sorry I haven’t gotten to your questions before now, I’ll number my answers to go with the questions or comments, here goes….
#1 – Jen~Yes, there are Sensitive Formulas of MASCARA . My Makeup line has one if you’d like to try it. You can email me directly through my website & order. It is $12. And yes you should replace it every couple months.
#2-Samantha~ Follow the directions I posted under Neutral Medium Shadow. Just because you want a SMOKEY EYE doesn’t mean the color has to be dark. Try a medium Brown or grey & maybe with a bit of shimmer. I have a couple colors that work great for this. Twig (brown) & Pewter (grey) I can also recomend eyeliners to add to the effect. Always go over your pencil eyeliner with your darker eyeshadow to set it (it won’t smudge or disappear half thru your day) it also ties your eyeliner in with your shadow look) BLUSH- I also have 3 different blush colors that look so natural. Depending on your coloring I can advise.
#4-Theresa~10 ITEMS IN PURSE- I’m not suggesting that you carry all these items in your purse everyday. I meant your makeup bag or basket at home in your bathroom or at your makeup mirror. If you are using quality maeup & applying correctly ( I give lessons ) you shouldn’t need anything other than powder, lip liner & lipstick or gloss (maybe an eyeliner) for your purse. AND you are never too old to wear eyeliner. I will be 42 on my next birthday & am not planning on stopping anytime soon. Everyone has to assess how much to apply & where ( a makeup artist can help) but it accentuates the eyes & makes lashes look thicker which it more youthful. many women think as we get older we need to revert back to when we didn’t wear makeup, to look younger…not so.
I have not used LATISSE or do I know anyone who has. I’m a little skeptical because of possible side effects. That’s just too close to the yes to be messing around when so many have sensitive eyes anyway. But check with a dermatologist.
Most other responses were comments on others posts. If you have any questions, please keep posting or email me directly through my website. If you want to SEND ME A PHOTO of yourself & by skintone & haircolor I can make suggestions!!! I will be submitting articles here on Imperfect Women again!
I keep all that in my make-up bag except for the lip liner, I’m more of a lip gloss kinda gal but thanks for the tips.
