Well I will give this thread a shot. There is something that I love about every decade that I have lived through.
I was born in the 50s so of course that says it all for that decade.
I graduated from high school and college in the 70s and was married in this decade so I have many fond memories and oh so many good times.
The 80s was monumental for my husband and I. We moved over 2000 miles away from family and friends to California as a sort of working vacation ( we are still here – it has been one hell of a long working vacation). We have our children in this decade and bought our first and second house. So many good memories.
The 90s was a so much fun because our sons grew into young men and we were able to experience so many great moments with them through all of their activities and sports that they participated in. One son graduated from high school in this decade.
2000s saw one son graduate from high school and college and another son married. But the 2000s also had some sad and difficult times involving illness, divorce and death.
But my all time favorite decade was of course the one that I skipped up above and that is the 60s. I absolutely have nothing but great memories for this decade. It was such a simple time with simple food, clothing, cars, toys. Life was simple. It was so easy to turn on a TV or an oven. As children we played outside in the summer from morning until night and never had any worries. We made our own fun and used our imaginations.
We celebrated Christmas at school.
The Space Program,the Beatles, The Ed Sullivan Show…. I could go on and on. But the most important thing to me was probably the family unit. There was a closeness back then between families that I don’t see much of anymore where I live.
I found this website that probably sums it up better than I can. I was kind of taken aback when I was reading this site and felt the exact same way about so many things that the owner of this site did and saw that he was born on the same month and year that I was.
Pam, I am sorry 00 brought you heartache and hope this next decade is easier on you and your family. I like the 60′s too, but for different reasons. Most of the things you mentioned are just a little before my time to have experienced. My year of birth is pathetically tagged on to the end of the baby boomer era, but we are really more children of the 70s. I remember the 60′s being that time of riding bikes, free on the street to play and be wild, coming home from school to watch a local station’s kid show. I was too young to know of any troubles outside of my own neighborhood.
I like the late 90′s because both of the boys were in their later teens. As my parenting responsibilities lessened, we had a lot of good times. It was nice to become friends with my children before they went out on their own.
I would have to say the 90′s was my favorite decade of my life so far. I was too young to remember the 70′s and the 80′s I also was just a young runt and I try to not remember the 80′s because near the end of that decade my parents ripped my family apart and I would rather just forget the 80′s all together. I want to remember the 80′s had good quality TV shows. I did my most growing up in the 90′s. I graduated from high school, moved from my parents home, lived a destructive life and met my husband, good music and the baby doll dress all in one decade. 10 years of craziness and I wouldn’t have changed a thing!!

I was born in 1968, so I can’t really say I have any memories of that decade. Unlike some of the happier memories of the 1960′s that Pam recounts, I think by the later years, there was some genuine despair going on (similar somewhat to what I see now). Of course, I didn’t personally experience it, but I know the assassinations of Dr. King and Bobby Kennedy really shook my mom up. Of course, the Vietnam War was another issue that tore many families apart and was a grim reminder of the toll war takes on us all.
The 1970′s were groovy! Even growing up in a big city, we still did the same things kids in earlier generations did – played outside until dark and rollerskated all over the neighborhood! We had a lot of freedom from an early age. I just don’t see that happening today in most communities.
The 1980′s are a mixed bag, but it was cool to be growing into my independence. The fashion and hair were terrible (my daughter disagrees w/me on this point LOL).
The 1990′s were probably my favorite. I got to see my daughter grow from baby to toddler to early tween. She hadn’t yet developed a teen attitude, so that was good. I was growing in my career and becoming more self-confident. There was also some unpleasant stuff, but it is overshadowed by the good.
The 00′s? Um, just ok. I associate it so closely with September 11 and a lot of the aftermath. I feel like I came out of my bubble and really realized how scary the world can be and how many people live under oppression. I lost both my parents too. On the plus side, I was lucky to continue to have a stable job and my closest family members and I were healthy so I am not unaware of my blessings.
I agree with 90′s as being my favorite. Like Darlene said…baby doll dresses, doc martens, flannel, grunge, nirvana and coffee house rock. Can’t beat that.
The 90′s! I loved the 70′s for the carefree blessed childhood I had, and the 80′s had big hair. But the 90′s was the decade I married my husband, we had all three of our children, and we bought the house that is our home. I feel like I am dishonoring other important parts of my life though by choosing just one decade.

I would say the 00′ was a good decade too!! I grew up emotionally in this decade!!
I was born in ’82, so what I remember from the 80′s is Fraggle Rock, Punky Brewster, Rainbow Bright, AquaNet & big, big hair, as well as perms.
I loved the doc martens, flannel, grunge, Nirvana & Pearl Jam of the 90′s. I miss a lot of it. This time is what I will refer to as “a simpler time” in my life. All I had to worry about was getting my homework done & what to wear to school the next day.
2006 was one of the best years of my life. I had great friends, a great job, a wonderful little studio apartment & met my husband. I actually miss 2006, so fun!
Pam- the 60′s sounded wonderful. I often would like to go to an easier way of life. I would like to be able to let my children play outside all day & walk to school by themselves (when they are in school) but sadly, these things won’t be a reality for my kids because of all the “crazies” that have surfaced in our society.
This article makes me a little sad, I can’t help but wonder what this world will be like for my children & their children- I hope the world can become a better place.
I dont know if I have a favorite. I will say though I was a child, I most love 80′s music and television. I am cursed with 80′s like big hair- had I been a teen then I would have been the envy of every big hair desiring girl in school.
Poke, Fraggle Rock is in instant play on Netflix–I only know this because I allow my brother access to my account to watch the on demands and it popped up in my history. I published it on facebook. He was embarrassed.
I was born in the 80s and wore jelly shoes (with socks, because at my school no socks was a no no). I wore jelly bracelets, had neon green bike shorts, had a walkman that played NKOTB on repeat. I will say, here, that the Muppets of the 80s were stellar, and I do miss that. I still listen to Rainbow Connection daily–favorite song at three, favorite song at thirty.
From there I took the giant leap into the nineties, starting with colored jeans over flowered bodysuits, baby doll dresses, big bangs, pegged acid washed jeans, with Eastland shoes and preppy sweaters and blouses, to “shit kicker” boots (generic doc martens), men’s 501 button flies and flannel shirts. My music was alternative–anyone remember Jed the Fish and the out-of-order countdown? That was my lifeline to cool music, since I lived in rap/pop infested waters.
Personally 2000-10 has been my favorite decade–I can vote, drink (even though I don’t), I am (marginally) employed at a job that lets me dress in suits and feel important, and I’m finally old enough to wear whatever I want, regardless of whether it is in fashion and still be in style–my style. I think the current culture (fashion wise) is anything goes. I also like that there is so much revivalism going on. This winter I wore a cloche hat and everyone commented on how lovely and stylish it was. Another day it was a rain hat, same thing. And then a beret. It occurred to me that people don’t wear hats anymore but slowly but surely around town I am starting to see cute hats, and not just on the cold days–but to complete an outfit. I like that even in my small town just that little bit of polish, that tiny bit that harkens back to an age I wasn’t alive in, has been renewed.
Ahhhh Erin Kate- thank you for refreshing my memory of jelly shoes- I had one in every color, not the most comfortable shoes but they were so cheap! Somehow I managed to block the bike shorts out of memory & yes I totally rocked the colored jeans w/ body suits- hahaha. And yes of course, the Eastlands, when I was in 4th/5th grade, one wasn’t cool if they didn’t own Eastlands (w/the curly side shoe string) & the black&white Adidas shoes. Ohh the memories!
Erin Kate, I’ve noticed more hats, too. I have a friend who always wears one. She had to get approval from her principal to wear her hats since the principal had instituted a “no hats inside” policy directed at young men and their ball caps. I was shopping last weekend with my daughter and we both noticed many more hats on men and women that looked nicer.
Ah, eastlands with the cool laces. We were too poor to get them, so I had a look-alike pair of shoes. Memories.
Ann, I have a new love affair with hats, I absolutely love them to complete an outfit. Super cute–not too church lady hats are fun.
I enjoyed the 70′s as a kid. It was carefree, Paul McCartney & Wings and Fleetwood Mac and all the super groups of the 70′s were on the radio and in the arena concerts. It was a fun time. I enjoyed being around all my friends and older cousins. No computers! Less stress!
I also loved the 90′s (up until ’99, the year my dad died) because that was a great time for me in my career. I felt so involved in it and had a passion for it. I still do, but the appreciation from management was awesome. It was a different time and place.
oh yes the 80′s! jelly bracelets and jelly shoes! Pound Puppies, Care Bears,Rainbow Brite and Cabbage Patch Kids! Plastic charm bracelets and leg warmers paired with high top Reebok sneakers and fingerless gloves. Thanks for reminding me.
I forgot to add two things from the 90′s….technicolor tshirts and hammer pants.
Okay, I can see how it would be fun to be a child of the 80′s. That’s when I had my children and that part was wonderful. We all love Fraggle Rock and we still have a Pound Puppy. In the adult world, I was apart of it all, but I disliked the high maintenance hair and the uncomfortable clothing which was usually “hot to trot”. I was young and didn’t mind that part, but it was a hassle. I really like more comfortable clothing and pretty much insist on it.
“Hands Across America” was pretty cool and all the Michael Jackson videos after MTV got going..Wow, MTV was weird at first.
oops, let me clarify as I just dropped a kid up in my last comment. The two boys were little in the 80′s. I do have another little girl who is a child of 00.
OMG, I forgot jelly shoes! I loved those. They weren’t the most comfortable, but we thought we were so stylish in our lavender jellies…
The 90′s!! I was in highschool, great times, great music and I never had so much fun as I did during that time!
