The Maxi-Dress made a come back about two years ago and appears to still be going strong in today’s fashion world. It’s being called the “dress of the summer.” Jenifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Ritchie and Eva Mendes are a few celebrities who have recently been seen out and about town sporting this look.
The Maxi-Dress has become a staple of comfort regardless of size. It can be seen in all types of cuts, styles, colors, and lengths. It is a floor or ankle length informal dress and usually is form fitting at the top and loose flowing at the bottom, cut to flow over the body. Not everyone can wear this look well and depending on your height it can sometimes alter the way your body looks, making tall people look shorter or women of average weight look heavy.
I remember these dresses being in style when I was twenty, and I found a picture of myself wearing one in1975.
I have a little bit of a Princess Diana thing going on there… in that you can see through my dress. Yikes! I guess I am pretty lucky I wasn’t being courted by Prince Charles at the time.
Would you wear a Maxi-Dress as you go about your regular day? To work? Do you own any of these dresses?
The question remains though, is it here to stay?

I have a maxi dress that I love, but ou do have to be careful about the cut. Mine has an empire waist and that flatters everyone. I wore it on Mothers Day actually. Love the picture!
I love them. They are easy to make as well for those who like to sew! There are some very simple ones that you can whip up in no time flat. I hope they stick around a while. I am tired of seeing everyone’s butts hanging out of the tiny hooker dresses! It’s nice to see a little class come back to clothing!
Pam,
That picture of you brings back lots of memories. I think my sister and I had the exact same dress or something very similar. Makes me think of Joni Mitchell, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Jimi Hendrix, and Woodstock. Love those “Hippie Days”!
Love the picture, Pam!
I have one Maxi-Dress, but I would like more.
I wouldn’t wear it to work or even Saturday errands, but to laze around the house or an informal gathering? Yes!
I hope they stick around. I think they are versatile enough that they deserve to be available every summer.
I love long dresses. I wear them all the time in the summer. I wear them around the house and everywhere else. They are so comfortable and cool. No matching, just slip them on and go. Most of mine have shoulder sleeves and don’t look like evening wear. I guess I’ve been out of style for a while since they are staple for me. When they go out of out-of-style, I will still be wearing them.
Love the dress and your hair is so pretty.
LoriC, I have looked at some patterns and saw I some I liked but never made any. I would like to make them myself so I can have them exactly as I want them w/my material of choice.
Pam, you are gorgeous.
Does anyone remember the Midi? Or am I dating myself?? In the 60′s to 70′s we wore maxi, midi (ankle) and mini. My mother made some of my clothes from the McCalls patterns and one year she made me a one piece jumpsuit type thing with giant wide legs (bell bottoms). Of course at that time (late 60′s) no one was wearing them yet. I wore it one day and cried my eyes out because people made fun and stared. Next day she cut them down to above the knee. About a year later everyone wore wide legs. guess I was a trendsetter. Also she brought home material for pants that was the landscape from Woodstock. It was the crowd scene. Very cool I was!
Oh, Pam, you are beautiful! Prince Charles isn’t good enough, let me tell you.
My daughter and three of my sisters have these dresses and they look comfortable and feminine. I like them. Not enough to give up my shorts, but there you go. I have no style sense.
I love the picture Pam.. You look great!!! I remember wearing them when I was 18. Haven’t tried one on for years. I’m not one for dresses but it sure looks comfortable, I’m all for that.. Would wear one to a wedding if I looked halfway decent in it. I wear alot of Capris for Summer..
I’ve got a couple that I made a number of years ago ’cause I was curious as to whether I’d like them or not and didn’t want to spend a lot of money to find out, so I bought a pattern and some fabric on sale . Used the same pattern for both and just changed the neckline….. one is sleeveless and one has cap sleeves. I wear them to church when it’s really hot as we don’t have AC in our church. Our church is pretty informal and those long dresses are very cool to wear in hot weather. Plus I have some pretty nasty looking varicose veins and don’t wear regular length dresses any more because of those, but you can’t see them in a long dress.
To be honest, I would not wear this anymore. More for the younger generation. I prefer capri pants for summer also and t-shirts. But I love the look.
I love my maxi dresses. I have several Gypsy05 dresses, which are covered enough on top that I can still wear a real bra. In my area, though, they are not really considered–normal. I wore a black knit maxi and flip flops last summer while shopping for office furniture and one man asked me “Are you going to a fancy party?” I said “no, I’m going to buy a desk.” Columbus, OH apparently is not very fashion forward.
I have a maxi and like it. It’s not quite as comfy as I would like since it’s strapless, and I’m warmer when I wear it as opposed to a shorter skirt. I’m also tempted to wear heals with it, but that dresses it up too much. I think they’re so feminine.
Pam, you looked adorable!
I wore a very similar dress to the one you have on in your picture to my high school prom, and one like it when I was a bridesmaid in my brother and sister-in-law’s wedding (both events were back in 1972!).
I love maxi dresses! And I would definitely wear them around the house during the summer months! And I’d wear it out to do errands too. It hides a multitude of sins (BIG SMILE here!).
