It’s officially Fall and Halloween is right around the corner. It’s a fun holiday for both the adults and the kiddies.

When I was young, it was all about the candy and seeing your friends out on the street. My childhood costumes were those store-bought pajama type. I disliked them because I knew they weren’t real costumes. Barbie, Wonder Woman and other characters did not go around with a picture of themselves on the front of their chest. It never mattered once you were out on the street, the quest for candy took over any reservations about how one looked.

I have always enjoyed making costumes. I don’t do anything too fancy, I always say “it’s the affect that counts”. One of easiest was an Alf costume I made for one of the boys. That one was a lot of fun. Later, we stuffed it, put in blazing red eyes and made him hold a bloody knife in our haunted yard. Now, that the selection of costumes for sale in the stores is so fantastic, I just let my little one pick out what she wants. They’re as good or better than anything I can whip up.

My little one is looking forward to the festival that takes place at a county park every year. There’s a bonfire to roast marshmallows, a magician and a big puppet show. The event is geared towards little ones and includes a long haunted hayride. We go there every year in addition to the trick-or-treats at the local malls, I took her out in the neighborhood a couple of times. We would go around a nearby friend’s house, but I decided not to go house-to-house anymore. I didn’t like the strange houses and some guy passing out candy (possibly a dad, and he was feeling no pain) hit on me. I was so mad and it made me re-evaluate the safety issue. It’s shame, because with my older children, I thought the malls weren’t “real” trick-or-treating. But, things change and with the county park festival and the malls, my little one has a great Halloween.

For more years than I can remember, my friends have held a wonderful party. They always outdo themselves on decorations. One year, a spider was wrapped around their house. Last year, there were beautiful Tikis. The host had made them out of big tubes of cardboard. He had to cut one in half to get it out of the garage. There was debate as to if rockets would be shot out of them, but it was deemed too risky…it was really tempting.

Please share your holiday pics for a special slide show. We would love to see your costumes and decorations, or any Fall pic you’d like to share. Tell us your tales of trick-or-treat and thoughts on Halloween.

We will place your pictures in a sideshow on the home page. Send them to info@imperfectwomen.com. Please put Halloween Pics in the subject heading.
