Summer is here. Specifically – July. Almost everyone is a fan of this time of year. Longer and warmer days. Backyard barbeque’s. And if you lucky, perhaps a vacation — or at least a staycation.

One of the things I enjoy about summer is a little bit of a guilty secret. I am a fan of “Big Brother.” Yes, that show. The one where twelve strangers are locked up in a production studio (I mean, house) for eleven weeks or until they get voted out (whichever comes first). I have heard all the slams against the show – “It’s further proof of the dumbing down of American entertainment.” “The show only casts hot young bods with no brains.” “Julie Chen is the worst reality TV show host ever.” You know what, I agree with each of assertions, but I still plan to watch. Why? Well, I guess I am a bit invested. I have been watching since Season One – shout-out to Josh, Eddie and Chicken George!

Part of the fun is also the fact that the cameras are on 24/7 in the “Big Brother” house. You can subscribe to live internet feeds for a nominal fee, but there are plenty of bloggers who do an hour-by-hour run down of the latest house happenings so you might want to save your dineros. This makes Big Brother 11 different from other reality shows. There is no doubt that “Big Brother” producers edit their footage like all reality TV show producers do. That is to say, you can bet there will be heroes and villains, hookups and breakups, and as much conflict as they can wangle out of the cast. The distinction with “Big Brother” is savvy internet viewers can see through the manipulations of the producers and form their own opinions about the contestants.

Each season, “Big Brother” has a unique hook. Speaking for myself, I could do without these gimmicks. At least this year we won’t have to watch two siblings who have never met each other try to get to know each other before deciding to throw each other under the bus or witness former couples whose relationships ended badly suddenly find out they will be bunking with each other. Sigh. This year, the producers have decided to split the cast into four cliques ala high school. We will have the “populars”, “athletes”, “brainiacs” and “off-beats.” What it lacks for in subtlety, hopefully it will make up for in entertainment.

The show is scheduled to run Sundays, Tuesday and Thursdays. Assuming there is reader interest, we will try and put up a fresh post each episode to discuss the latest happenings.

Happy summer viewing all!

    You know I’m there!

Julie Chen had on another hideous outfit tonight. That makes 237 in a row, I believe.

I never know what to think this early and am always afraid to say I like anyone because that person usually ends up being Satan’s handmaiden. I will say I am not impressed with Miss Huge Fake Boobs. I can understand why women get fake boobs; I cannot understand the thinking that goes into getting ones that are that big. She looks all out of proportion and when she says she’s a “bikini model” my mind goes to a very skanky place because there’s just no way she’s any kind of legit model with those things stuck to her chest.

I also don’t like the surfer dude.

Jeff is hot. I hope he’s not a jerk.

Jesse wouldn’t have been my first choice to bring back (or 10th or 20th probably), but IIRC he is good for some goofy entertainment, if only because he thinks he’s smarter than he is.

I’m an avid viewer of Big Brother! I actually chat with some other ladies during the episodes! I follow the HOH on twitter as well as some other fansites that update feed info. and twitter stuff out!I just want to say how NOT happy I am with Jesse back in the house! Gross! These people would be better served by getting rid of him ASAP cause he had his chance! But apparently he’s quite popular with the women. As for the nominees? I don’t know what to think. I don’t dislike Chima or Lydia so whoever goes I guess might be forgotten by the second week!Hope to keep chattin with you Anya and Jennie!

I love the show and have been watching it since the beginning also! This show looks like it will be good. I tremendously dislike Jessie!

    Jennie says:

I would rather keep Lydia than Chima. Chima seems sort of catty. Lydia seems to be forming an alliance with Jordan, Jeff and Braden. I like Lydia, Jordan and Jeff, so that alliance is going to probably be my favorite for the time being.

Are you guys keeping up with the internet live feeds? I ask cause I don’t wanna say something and spoil someone!

    Anya says:

Hi Soly! Yes, I have the internet feeds. I have only turned it on once, however. I have been super-busy and it’s easy to keep track via the internet too. As the season progresses, I am sure I will have the feeds on more!

I think we have a small group now. Feel free to share “spoilers.” If interest picks up, we may create a separate thread for “the show” and “internet feeds aka what’s really happening.”

I feel kind of bad that Braedon looks like a goner. I guess he isn’t really campaigning? We will see if he steps up his game tomorrow.

So far, I like Jeff, Jordan and Michelle. I have mixed-to-negative feelings on the rest. Yes, Jesse is a tool. Lydia and Ronnie are playing too hard for my taste.

    Jennie says:

I still kind of like Lydia, though I’m not sure if it’s just that I don’t like to switch allegiances once I’ve decided I like someone on reality shows (it does happen, but often I will give a player a fair amount of slack if I’ve already decided I like them). Russell, OTOH, whom I decided was a total tool, seems to be more likable lately. Anya has a theory that he’s much more appealing with his shirt on, and I think she may be right. Plus, he doesn’t seem to be entirely brainless, so that helps. That said, he looked ridiculous in his fight with Jeff on tonight’s show.

Jordan is cute. I watched a fair amount of last night’s BB After Dark today, and it was more entertaining than usual. Jordan does a good impression of Jeff’s Chicago accent and it’s a riot. There was a lot of sex talk when everyone was sitting around outside last night, and while I sometimes find that tiresome, we did learn that Michelle is a bit freaky under her shy, brainy exterior (and doesn’t seem to mind talking about it! I hope she doesn’t regret that later…)

I haven’t really being watching the live feeds either, though I have them. I’ll probably watch more in the middle – typically the most interesting time in BB, after some of the chaff is weeded out but before the group gets small and boring.

Please let it be Chima that goes tonight!

I hate that it all comes down to that little weasal, Ronnie!

    Samantha says:

I love Big Brother. I’ve watched since the first season but this year I havent even seen it once! My mother was visiting and we’ve been out each night, I’m anxious to get caught up on who I should love and loathe!

    Jennie says:

I’ve been meaning to revive this thread!

Gosh, I dislike Ronnie. I can’t stand it when people feel the need to play the game SO HARD. Ronnie appears to tell lie after lie, often with no discernable purpose. It will come back to bite him in the butt. Soon, I hope.

I really hope none of the Athlete clique or their allies win HOH on Thursday. The house needs shaking up. It would be okay if Jeff won, I suppose, but he can’t put any of the other athletes up…right now my top choices to go soon are Natalie (who has to stick her nose into every argument, no matter how little it has to do with her) and Ronnie. I also have no use for Chima (mean and arrogant) or Lydia (another, like Ronnie, who seems to lie for no reason) and very little for Kevin (who is boring and self-righteous).

A lot of viewers on various message boards I visit seem to want Jesse and/or Russell out, but they are second tier for me. Jesse is just a dumbass who thinks he’s smart and once his little clique is broken up he’ll be easier to take. I don’t dislike him personally as much as I do some of the others, though I certainly don’t *like* him. Russell can be a real bully and a jerk, but he also has some quality of charm and intelligence that makes me not want to give up on him entirely. I think his days are probably numbered for several reasons, anyway.

Samantha, I already told you who to like and dislike! :-)

    Just trust Anya, ok???

    Soly says:

I’ve decided tonight will be key in whether I keep watching religiously this summer or not! I’m so over the clique thing and the bullies that are running the house right now! I’m hoping either Casey, Jeff or even Russell (to a point) get HOH. And that whoever wins puts up Ronnie AND Jessie so that at least one of them goes home.

I think that putting them up both together will blow the game wide open, as opposed to back dooring one of them. If they’re both up, they’re gonna have to go out of their comfort zone of hiding behind people and showing themselves for who they are.

And although I REALLY want Ronnie out, I think I’m leaning more towards Jessie but only because I’m sick of him and Lydia and Natalie and how these women fawn over that pea brain!

Phew! Had to get that out! LOL!

    Anya says:

I agree with you 100% Soly.

What do you think of Russell? There’s something about him that keeps me (potentially) liking him even though I know I probably shouldn’t. Maybe it is the fact that he does have brains. Same with Laura. They were both pleasant surprises in that regard (brought in for their bodies, but there is something going on upstairs too). Unfortunately, Laura = RIP.

I was saying this morning I hoped Casey would get HOH. I think he’s got the brains to do what needs to be done. Jeff is so pretty to look at, but I worry about his game strategy (to the extent he has one).

I can’t stand the fawning of those two (L & N) either. I would almost rather one of them go first, but I agree with you to shoot for the bigger targets.

  14. 14
    Soly says:

I totally agree about Russell. He has proven that he does have a brain and strategy. Laura was also a welcome surprise! Go figure!

I’m not really liking that they went with this “clique” situation. They all adhered to it from the beginning and I like it when it’s more free-for-all and people have to strategize and align without being pushed one way or the other. And it seems this group has taken the mentality of their “clique” to heart. Thus the jocks end up being “bullies”, the popular getting picked off first (kinda because of jealousy maybe?), the outcasts “causing trouble”, etc.

    Can’t wait!

Interesting story about Ronnie I stumbled across:

    spoiledmom.blogspot.com/2009/07/cbss-big-brother-contestant-ronnie.html

The clique twist has made things more interesting but it’s also limited some of the moves players can make. Overall, I don’t think it’s worth it – at least not the part about not being able to nominate members of your own clique.

I did end up liking Laura more than I expected; I still think her fake boobs are ridiculously sized, and I could do without her going on about how everyone hates her because she’s so pretty. But in spite of those things, she’s fairly smart (by BB standards, at least), and not particularly obnoxious or unkind. She’s head and shoulders above several other castmembers in my estimation. I’m sorry to see her go.

    Anya says:

Thanks, for the link Jennie. He is a little rat, isn’t he?

Things didn’t go our way last night, did they ladies? Sigh.

We will see what happens with the POV, but any way you cut it, most likely Jordan, Casey or Michelle is going home. Not happy about that at all. :-(
