Just as the Ground Zero Mosque is not a legal question neither is the Koran burning. They both have the legal right to do so …but is it morally right? Do we have the right to impose our will to ask people not to do something because it’s just not right? General Petraeaus has stated that the burning of the Koran on 9/11 could be harmful to our troops. Shouldn’t that be a good enough reason for this so called Pastor not to do it? Where do we draw the line ?
If and when this Pastor does burn the Koran, should the news be responsible if they cover it? Obviously this is a publicity stunt to garner attention for this 50 person congregation. Isn’t it better not to give them the attention?

Um, no? Because of the Constitution and all?
Why this reaction to this and not the building of the Mosque ?
Because descreting a religion’s holy book is not at all like building a house of worship and cultural center? Not only are the two things not equivalent, they are diametrically opposite.
I have little opinion on the media coverage – I would love more responsible media coverage of…everything, but I’m not going to single out the coverage of this story as being especially inappropriate. The fact that we’re talking about it makes us part of the problem if that’s how we’re going to judge it.
Being down right stupid is still legal in our country! Quite simply, Terry Jones is NUTS!
Hint…Gen. Petraeaus didn’t make his comment w/o his commander’s go ahead! Daily, something in this country inflames the radicals around the world. I’m sorry when our president did comment that he didn’t use this as ‘a teachable moment’…this act of one man is NOT the values of our country, but neither do we condone those who would kill or threaten to kill others in reaction!
AMAZING stuff…burning the Koran brings our country to our knees, but it’s just fine to burn our flag & Bible.

Where in the Constitution does it say ..we are not allowed to ASK people do do something ? That’s a new one to me.

The point of the post was ……they both have the LEGAL right to do what they are doing…..but is it the RIGHT thing to do.
I do agree people have every right to be stupid and it seems in a free society they run rampant.
I just think we as a Nation have become so cowardly. We are letting one segment of society dictate to us and we are falling right in line. Why have Muslims become so protected here? I don’t remember any President saying anything when Jesus and the cross were placed in a urine bottle or elephant dung and displayed as “art”, or the constant attack on Christians in this country. It seems the President just can’t help himself from getting involved in things like the “beer summit”,Rush Limbaugh, attacking Fox news, etc. This is not where the President’s attention should be focused.
The military just burned a bunch of Christian Bibles that were sent to Afghanistan. Did all the Christians want to start a Crusade to avenge the burnings? It’s absurd. The Koran burning is just one of the many slights the “crazies” are using to inflame hate. When this dies down they will be back to focusing on their typical hate for the Jews!

You are the reaon that we all cannot unite…..Keep causing problems and you will see where it gets you…. War……………. and don’t you think that all of us have had enough of that?!!!!!!!!!!!! Go away!!! We don’t need you here.!.!….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot put into words my disgust at this pastor wanting to burn what others consider holy. I had read that the city denied him burning permits and he could be arrested. I was hoping they would arrest at the first strike of the match.
I have just read that the pastor called it off. Thank goodness.
I was as opposed to this as I am to the Mosque being built. It is disrespectful, anti-muslim and hateful. Thankfully I just saw that the pastor changed his plans. I think this was a sick and twisted publicity stunt. Ridiculous…to say the least.

Stu, I see what you are saying. Books carry a different connotation to me. If the pastor wanted to send a message to the extremists, he should not pick a book revered by millions. His message was over-run by stupidity.
Well, he should not burn any book.

I agree with you that he should not burn the book. It’s a shame we have elevated to a national debate. As I was saying …The mosque and the book burning are both allowed by law, but stupid to do.
Where in the Constitution does it say ..we are not allowed to ASK people do do something ? That’s a new one to me.
Sorry, I was reacting to this part of the sentence: “impose our wil”, not “ask” – it seems like you are talking about two different concepts in the same sentence. Of course we have the right to ask, but we do not have the right to impose our will.

From what I’ve seen now, it’s part of the conservative line to compare the mosque/cultural center to the koran burning, but I think it’s an inaccurate and offensive comparison. Building a house of worship simply is not at all the same thing as burning someone’s holy book. Whatever people want to believe, I do not think the mosque and cultural center are intended as an f-you to anyone. The same cannot be said about the Koran burning.

You are so wrong and so predictable. You need to get off the party line…This is a political ploy by EVERYONE……..
A transcript of the relevant portion of the segment can be found below:
Well, that was short lived. This pastor is rethinking his announcement about not having the burning.
A Florida pastor who called off a Quran burning said late Thursday he would “rethink our position” after a Muslim leader said the minister incorrectly announced that the proposed Islamic center near New York’s ground zero would be moved as part of a deal.
Well …somebody will burn a Koran on Saturday.

I’m afraid whatever point you are trying to make is not as clear as you think it is, because I have no idea what you’re talking about. Nothing after the gratuitous insult directed my way, anyway.
The only similarity I’m seeing between the mosque controversy and the Koran burning is that both expose some very ugly anti-Muslim sentiments in this country. It’s very depressing.

No insult……..but it’s pretty clear to me. You want to make it partisan and it’s just all politics on both sides.
And now it’s called off again. Thank goodness. CNN
“We will definitely not burn the Quran,” the Rev. Terry Jones told NBC’s “Today” on Saturday “Not today, not ever.” The burning had been planned for 6 p.m.
