If you are the kind of baseball fan I am, you probably have:
a) one team you love and root for;
b) a few that you are fond of and wish to do well (unless they are playing team A); and
c) several that you actively dislike.
Unless you are a fan of one of the eight teams who made it to the playoffs (see first round match-ups below), you will likely be watching from the sidelines and rooting for certain teams to fail. This can actually be more enjoyable than it sounds. Of course, a lot depends on the match-ups. The arrogant, over-publicized, brought and bought together by the almighty dollar, Yankees, top my list of teams I’d like to see make spectacular fools of themselves. How likely is this to happen, however? The Yankees will be facing the winner of the Twins/Tigers one-game playoff. This one-game playoff is necessary to determine which of these two powerhouses with a .531 winning percentage gets to be eliminated in short order by the Yankees. Sigh.
I am kind of meh on the other contenders. I am so over the Red Sox (after a brief infatuation in 2004). They have become another version of the Yankees for me. I can’t support the division rivals of my team (Giants). Since I have to root for someone, I am going with the Cardinals and Phillies, who have loyal fans (some of them IW contributors!), and don’t actively annoy me.
What about you? What match-ups will you be watching and who are you hoping will choke big time? Or perhaps some of you are waiting for Monday night’s big match-up between the Packs and Vikes before thinking about October baseball?
-Yankees vs. Twins/Tigers
-Phillies vs. Rockies
-Angels vs. Red Sox
-Cardinals vs. Dodgers

I’m from the South and (correct me if I’m wrong) all we have are the Braves. Pro Baseball is not here what it is in other areas of the country. We have a lot of minor league teams that are fun to follow though~
Well, you have Florida teams, Sam, but I know some Southerners don’t consider Florida part of the real South.
The thing is, I’ve been a baseball fan for so long, I have a grudge against nearly every major league team – certainly I have at least a mild dislike for the majority of them. I don’t like any of the NL teams, though I guess I’d root for St Louis (this requires me getting over the 1987 playoffs, but it was 22 years ago); I like Tony LaRussa and I know the fans in St. Louis are among the best fans in baseball.
My AL pick would be the Tigers; hopefully they can get past the Twins, a team I have a strong but obscure dislike for (based on a player that used to be a Twin and then was a Giant and is a complete and utter d@ck, and yes, I know that’s a dumb reason to dislike a team).
Beyond that, any rooting I’ll be doing will definitely be rooting against rather than for. And yes, it can be satisfying.
It is half time and yes I have been waiting for the Packer – Viking game. So far, not so good.
I am not a big baseball fan but I hope the Dodgers lose. That team does not have any real fans. They just go to the game, arrive in the 4th inning, make an appearance and leave in the 7th. Doesn’t matter what the score is.
Not the Yankees. I guess the Angels.
Now back to this football game.

Don’t forget the stupid beach balls they insist on bringing to games.
I think a certain well-known tool was at a Dodger game this weekend….Hmm.
I am pulling for the Colorado Rockies, although I suspect the yanks-red sox winner will probably win it all. I also hope the dodgers fail as the Manny hype is so over the top for a 38 year old singles hitter (for the second half of this season) who was caught using steroids and never said he was sorry.
I agree, Jeff (about Manny).
I would think Erin would wander over here to crow about yesterday’s Phillies victory.
Congrats, Erin.
Jennie, why don’t you like the Phillies? When they win, they make everyone so happy?
Hmm, I don’t remember why I don’t like the Phillies. I think it has something to do with a fight between them and the Giants sometime ago (between 5-10 years). If I recall correctly, there was a Phillies pitcher (I think it was Jose Mesa?) who was a complete crazy a-hole and insisted that he would hit a Giants batter every time he came up to bat. I can’t remember who the Giant was, but it was an ex-teammate of Mesa’s who had pissed him off with something he’d said about him in the media.
Plus which, I’m just not going to root for a team that won last year, unless it was a team I really, really liked.
(Okay, Wikipedia to the rescue – it was Omar Vizquel that Mesa hated. I looooove Omar Vizquel. Mesa can suck it.)
On reflection, I think the Mesa-Vizquel thing was much more recent, but I do think there was an earlier fight that made me dislike the Phillies.
Well, as long as you have a good, well-documented reason, lol.
I am an uber obnoxious Phillies fan! I love, love, love the Phils and am rooting for a repeat World Series.
We are tied 1-1 in the series and tonights game had to be postponed due to weather in Colorado. Though I love baseball, I will say that I think the season is too long. When it’s snowing during the playoffs, it’s time to ask if some games should be shaved off of the regular season.
Tomorrow we play in Colorado! Go Phils!
There you go! That’s more like what I am used to hearing. Go Phils!
Those darn Dodgers. I wish they would go away.
Don’t worry, if we face them again, we’ll do everything in our power to make them go away (again!)
Phillies or the Rockies, either one. Step up to the plate and do the right thing.
I hate that I have to wait until so late at night for the game to even start tonight! I hope the weather in Colorado is better. This is torture!
Well, it’s the Phils and the Dodgers facing off again! So exciting and nerve wrecking. If this last series is any indication of how the next ones will go, it will certainly be interesting.
Go Phils go!!!
Erin it is good to see you team back in the World Series again! I will be rooting for your team.
Thanks!!! I’m crossing my fingers. Nothing would make me happier than beating the Yankees. Of course, we don’t know if it will be the Yankees we face or the Angels….we shall see!
