We lose an hour of sleep, but the sun sets later. On the whole, it’s a great trade-off. I am SO EXCITED for “Spring ahead.” In fact, why do we have to go back at all? What’s the point? Why not keep it this way forever?
I am happy about the extra light at the end of the day, but grumpy about losing the hour. And a little bit trepidatious about how late the sun will rise on Monday morning. I *HATE* waking up in the dark. I may have to just be late for work!
We’ve got a new boss (ugh!) and we’re going over research etc. And with every new boss, they want to tweak things. (understandable) So, certain bits we’ve been doing have been have been scrapped. (I work in radio).
We (my on-air partner and I) are being more real…talking about our familes and daily lives more, etc. Which got me to thining…what is it that is most important to women in the morning? What do you all like to hear about that either could be helpful to you or you just find entertaining?
I like to hear about people’s every day life . Their family and kids. Funny family stories. Things that I can relate to. Crazy dates, eccentric family members.
That must be really hard for someone to do though without their family getting a little upset. I use to listen to Howard Stern from time to time (my husband still does) and I always wondered how his wife felt about the things he would discuss about their personal life. Especially their sex life. I guess she did not like it very much since they divorced. He is much more careful about what he says about his new wife.
Theresa, I haven’t listened to morning radio for awhile. I used to listen to music and I liked it when the stations had on a special guest and did the interview in between songs. I liked guests that involved something local, either an event or a organization. One that was memorable was a lady from one of the foster parent organizations. I’ll think about it a little more.
I have been listening to the same morning show since highschool. It’s funny- wihtout being corny. I love funny family/marriage stories. I think I would rather be entertained than helped in the AM. Good luck with the changes! How long have you been in radio?
I LOVE the extra light- can’t wait for Spring and Summer!
I spend 45 minutes in the car in the morning so I listen daily. I like funny interactions between hosts, traffic guys, weather guys. I like local stories and human interest stuff, funny stories about the families. I have been following the same guy for years now. I really care about his pound puppies (one just passed away,) his daughter and her growing up years. She now has a daughter herself, and this guy is a doting grandpa (a young one) and I love to hear the things he does with her. He brags about the littlest things, just like a good grandpa should. I like hearing about the news guys’ wife and kids, too. They laugh all morning, great laughs.
Theresa, I think it’s so cool you are one of these people! The morning guys are the funniest. I guess that’s to get us all going and help us improve our attitudes?
Theresa, I always wondered why they didn’t get local stores and restaurants to send in “great deals” today for us? Not too many, just what teh hosts think would be good?
Ladies, thank you so much for your input! I truly appreciate it! Seems we have been on target and just reading your responses, I’m going to make sure we stay the course. We keep it real. Don’t do corny things.
Sam-I’ve been in radio for 26 years…20 doing the morning show. We always say “this is fun, imagine if we had a real job”. Actually, sometimes it is very stressful (only when dealing with idiotic management and/or salespeople). Our new boss is truly out of his element. Has no clue what he’s doing and 5 staffs are dependent upon him and all 5 have complained how he never follows up on things, etc.
Ann, our cluster of stations have deals on restaurants. It started off really good. ($50 worth of food for $25), but the sales people are either too lazy to sell it properly or something because one would think we’d have different restaurants each week, and we haven’t. I would imagine a lot of other businesses could get into buying time like that, but a lot of them just aren’t creative. And, a lot of it also depends on hungry salespeople. Unfortunately, we don’t have that lately.
Yeah, it started off like gangbusters at our place. Actually, for the first year it was very successful.
Then, a turnover in salespeople. The newer folk didn’t get it and pursue it as it should be.
The thing I like about it (if done properly), a slew of different restaurants give the listeners great options. And, they go to places they may never have heard of or would’ve thought to go if they didn’t get the dining deal.
Theresa, your job sounds wonderful, but I don’t doubt that it has its downsides too. Dealing with all new management coming in having to put their imprint on things when the show was working just fine before they came along. I have experienced that as a listener and it’s aggravating, but you definitely feel for the hosts who are just following orders from above.
I think the single biggest component is the rapport between the two hosts, which I imagine you already have nailed down. I do like hearing about their lives. I listen to Sarah & Vinnie here in the Bay Area and I can tell they have to work on keeping the balance between sharing enough of themselves that the audience feels a connection, while not putting their significant others, kids, parents, etc. in a spotlight they don’t want to be in.
My morning show has a loose arrangement where if there isn’t anything else going on that hour (such as a celeb phone interview), the first half-hour is basically a rehash of last night’s TV and current gossip stories (ala American Idol talk or Tiger Woods). The second half-hour the other host takes on the news — but it is generally light news. A lot of what they talk about just serves as a jumping off point to other discussions.
What I don’t like in the morning — loud DJ’s, too much or over-the-top sex talk, and when you guys go on vacation!!!
I second the not liking the loud DJs and the shock jocks.
A PSA for the moms of littles ones: Tomorrow is St. Patty’s Day. Don’t forget to stick the color green on your child somewhere unless you want them to be pinched all day.
Yeah Anya, it is fun, but our new boss…who has been here since October…still doesn’t get his job. He doesn’t communicate to anyone on anything. It is very freaky. And, because of it, an atmosphere of the unknown is heightened. We try to ignore that and just have fun when we’re on.
Jennie, I feel the same way about shock jocks. And, loud jocks. We’ve always maintained a “friend” attitude and feel with our listeners. We are really topical. Lots of listener interaction, too. It works best. We have a loyal audience, which is good.
Really nice to hear from everyone regarding what you like in a morning show. I can’t tell you how invaluable your opinions are to me. Thank you!!
Can’t stand shock jocks – especially in the morning. We have a morning show here where there are 3-4 peeps who interact with each other and I really like that. Three are married and one is single so the stories on Monday morning are pretty funny!
Theresa I agree with all the other ladies, I like light hearted conversation in the morning. Funny stories, or sharing family stories always put a smile on my face. I want to walk into my job with a smile on face not jangled nerves from loud jocks.
HAPPY SAINT PATRICK’S DAY to all. Is anyone doing anything special today or tonight?
We had our monthly meeting at work yesterday and celebrated it yesterday with good food and some green desserts. I am not doing anything tonight.
Who here is Irish?
I understand we have some Irish. I volunteered at my daughter’s school this morning. They went all out. Lots of kids in green leprechaun hats. When I got there, her class was running around trying to find the tricks that a leprechaun had done in their classroom the night before. A little later, a big leprechaun came and showed them some magic. It was fun to see all the little ones.
Anya, it was a blast. So much funner than helping w/seatwork. The kids couldn’t believe what all the leprechaun had done to the room. The few that suspected the teacher were drowned out quickly by the other kids.
I have never fixed corn beef and cabbage, not even w/bacon (ita it makes everything taste better). I do not care for it. I remember being so hungry after some surgery, I hadn’t been able to eat for a few days. That’s what was served up (hospital style no less). I just stared it and then covered it back up. The jello was good. I do love cabbage rolls stuffed w/ground beef and rice in tomato sauce. I may have to make that soon, it’s been awhile.
Hope not too many got pinched today. They weren’t even doing that in my daughter’s class. Does that still happen?
Mom and Dad came up for corned beef and cabbage with potatoes, Irish soda bread, and Irish coffee and a green cake for dessert. It was a gorgeous day out.
Finally the weekend! I did not think it would ever get here. Anyone have any special plans? I have heard that good weather is expected in many different areas of the country. Hope those who have it are able to enjoy it.
Lily, I am raking through the garden today. It’s dry enough (finally) and the weather is beautiful. I rake through some of the terraces in the fall to make them look neater, but I always leave some seed heads for the birds to eat in winter. I will also leave some of the dry plant stalks and leaves through the spring, because the robins and their friends use it for nesting materials. No seeds or plants just yet. How about you?
It was glorious to watch the sun rise with a robin singing and cheeping in the birch tree this morning. WELCOME SPRING (officially)!!!
I am out on the West Coast but we are having absolutely beautiful weather also. Glad to hear people in the Midwest and East are getting a break from the cold weather.
I know some people are trying to work in their yards around here, but it is still mucky. We need those March winds to gently blow (emphasis on gently). We haven’t had that yet. Still, it’s warmer and we were snowed in a lot.
The kid event of the year was on tv tonight. The Kid’s Choice Awards 2010 on Nick. My little one didn’t make it through. So now, I’m just hanging out watching tv, clicking around and sorting socks. Hope everyone is having a good weekend.
Theresa, I get migraines too. My biggest symptom is light will hurt my eyes/make me wince for a day or so before the headache really hits. When I’m in the actual headache any light makes me sick, I cannot get out of bed, and the best way to describe the pain would be like needles jabbing my eyes, and tons of screechy noise in my head. That probably makes no sense, but that’s how it feels. The only thing I have ever found that does anything was midrin, which they don’t really prescribe any more. Mine are fairly rare at this point, my last was in 2006. I get tension headaches far more frequently, and in some ways I think they are worse for me.
I have had some real whoppers in the past, Theresa, but not too bad in recent years. With mine, I just get so nauseated and my head spins. With some people there are triggers and my trigger was going without eating for a long period. This would usually be at work when I had skipped breakfast and was too busy to get lunch.
I’ve experienced those headaches too Pam, where you don’t eat for a long period and then the headache comes on.
I think my trigger was the bright sunshine. That started off the kaleidescope eyes. I took 2 Advil Col & Sunus tablets yesterday afternoon and the massive headache really subsided last night. I was still a bit dizzy, but at least the pressure and pain in my head was mostly gone. 2 more advil late this morning.
Today, I just feel a little tired and disoriented.
I’ve never had a headache and a Tylenol takes care of the occasional headaches I do get. Kaleidascopes, dizziness, nausea, light sensitivity? i am very lucky to miss this. I get other things, though.
Theresa, I don’t get migraines, thank goodness. I get headaches from allergies and I think sometimes hormones are mixed in there. They are mostly seasonal. I never had them bad until I moved out to where the air is clean. I think I have to adapt and I take allergy med sometimes. I am a big wuss when I get one and it makes me feel bad for those who have migraines. I can’t imagine.
Hope everyone is ready to enjoy their weekend. I have been doing some Spring cleaning today. It’s been so nice to see the sun again. I can’t get enough of it after the Winter we had.
Theresa you have allergies? I have been miserable for the last few days with the warm weather and pollen. Will I ever quit sneezing:) I have only had a migrane once and it was induced by a shot in my back. All I can say is that I suffered for 8 days before they put me in the hospital and did a second patch. I never want to repeat it. I layed on the floor and did not get up unless to go the bathroom and then I would throw up from sitting up. It felt like my head was lead and every movement almost brought me to tears. Afterwards I would get very intense tension headaches but thankfully!!!! that disapeared after 6 months. From what I remember Pittsburgh is one has alot of cloudy days so maybe that sunshine did bring it on
Is anyone else terribly sad about how crazy Randy Quaid has become? I’ve enjoyed him in everything I watched him in, dramatic or comedy. He’s so funny in the Vacation movies.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. Thanks to Lily for reminding me to put up a reminder to set your clocks ahead. We lose one hour of sleep.
But I love the fact that spring is around the corner.

Theresa-
Our local news station features a different deal each week- $50 gift certificate for $25. Its a great deal and a huge hit.
Yeah, it started off like gangbusters at our place. Actually, for the first year it was very successful.

I am at least a quarter Irish, probably a bit more if I delved through all my relations!
Lily, that sounds so neat. These holidays are always more fun when you have little ones to celebrate with.
Pam, green desserts? Such as?
We are having corned beef & cabbage tonight (of course!). I may even crack open a Guiness!
I make my cabbage with bacon. Bacon makes everything better. I’m looking forward to it.
I’m wearing a green blouse today to stave off pinching.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone!

Well, the cold weather is back. March is supposed to come in like a lion and out like a lamb, but it often does the opposite around here.
I know some people are trying to work in their yards around here, but it is still mucky. We need those March winds to gently blow (emphasis on gently). We haven’t had that yet. Still, it’s warmer and we were snowed in a lot.

Anybody get migraine headaches? What’s it like for you?
I got a couple a few years ago. It was hard to see…things looked like I was looking through a kaleidescope. Eveything was jumpy looking.
I went to my eye doctor then and he told me it was mighraines. I asked if he was sure and he said his wife gets them, too.
I hadn’t had one since then….til now. Just wondering if anybody else gets these, with this symptom, too.
Hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather (80′s on the East coast here)
Theresa, I get migraines too. My biggest symptom is light will hurt my eyes/make me wince for a day or so before the headache really hits. A shot in your back? Yikes Diane!
We are all a group of tough women. I was cloe to going to the ER. If I didn’t have the same symptoms a few years ago…or if the pain intensified.
But all is well now. Sun is out and I’m wearing shades outside.
I mean to write “close” not cloe . D’oh!
Is anyone else terribly sad about how crazy Randy Quaid has become? I’ve enjoyed him in everything I watched him in, dramatic or comedy. He’s so funny in the Vacation movies.
I remember mos ago they were missing hearings and wanted for arrest. I don’t understand why it took so long for them to be arrested.
Here’s a link to ROL. They’re handcuffed and smiling.
That saddens me too, Lily. I can’t believe how some stars just throw it all away.
I don’t know what to make of the Quaids, but a likely explanation is some combination of drugs and/or mental illness.
I do feel bad when true talent is thrown away. It seems they are very isolated. You don’t hear about friends or family being involved in any way, but it’s possible they have tried to help. Who knows?
Bret Michaels has also been on my mind. I am not a fan of his music and recent dating shows, but I do feel very badly for his recent health woes. He is way too young. I am really hoping he can make a recovery without lasting effects.
