Gosselin’s aside my week started off with a bang losing my cell phone Sunday. I got drama about losing it and I guess I’m still drama about it now. The kids are gearing up for Halloween. The daughter has a birthday party to attend tomorrow and Friday I’ll have two sugared up kids with parties all day. Saturday we’ll have a quiet day at home and then off trick or treating for an hour. The daughter enjoys giving out Candy to the kids more than anything. I haven’t participated in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month like other years past but I told the hubby it’s an excuse to feel up the breasts
Enjoy your week!!
My teens have Halloween parties and my youngest is Trick or Treating this week. I bought a pumpkin but I have no interest at all in carving it into Jack-o-lantern. Why am I looking forward to Friday so much?
I am going on a haunted house trip on Friday night and going out partying Saturday, but I have a bunch of homework for Monday so I’m going to work my butt off between now and then. I guess all my profs expected us to really rest up over break because now they are piling the work on! Nothing too serious, the biggest thing is a 7-page Spanish paper, but I’m going to try to really push tomorrow through Friday afternoon because I want to have a really fun weekend.
Aaah, The week is going too fast. We still have to get a pumpkin. As far as I can tell, the malls that usually have trick-or-treat are not doing it this year. I’m not sure what we’re going to do about that. I want to call today to be sure.
There is a Halloween parade they have in town. It’s cool, because they do it a couple of days before trick-or-treat instead of trying to squeeze it all in. It was always such a rush to try to get home and everything done and kids in costume for trick-or-treat.
Darlene, bummer about the cell-phone.
Hope everyone has a good Halloween and the kids get lots of candy!
We decorated/carved our pumpkins last night. My two-year old put stickers on his and is really proud of his accomplishment. So much that he carried his little pumpkin around with him all night and set it atop his dresser in his room.
My husband had a heck of a time carving his. Its skin was soooooo thick. It took him almost two hours to finish. Our little one got a kick out of seeing the finished product on the front porch.
We’re going to a “not-so-haunted” forest for kids with my in-laws and nephew this Thursday night. On Halloween, we’re hosting an open house for family and serving a big pot of chili, spiced wine and hot apple cider. Our son is going to “trick or treat” at a few of the neighbors’ homes. We think he’ll get a kick out of giving candy out, too.
I was cleaning the house yesterday and actually listened to Christmas music. As crazy as it sounds, it was so relaxing — Josh Groban — old Christmas hymns. Aaaaaaaaah. Can’t wait. I actually have the gifts figured out for everyone.
Nancy, is there a radio station where you live that does the all Christmas music format, starting in mid-November and do you like that? Just curious.
Our station has done it in years past. The staff hates it and so does a lot of the audience. But, sometimes we’re forced to do it because management has the directive to do it.
What’s everyone else’s thoughts on All Christmas music all the time?
Theresa – yes, we have one station that from about Thanksgiving to Christmas day calls themselves the “Christmas Station.” I, personally, like it. They are pretty good at mixing it up. They typically do not play the stupid songs like “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” or Jessica Simpson’s “Let It Snow” which is one of the dumbest versions I have ever heard! LOL.
From an advertising standpoint (Are you in advertising?), I can see where it might be annoying, however, having that format probably brings on a new audience for that time which could help with overall revenue.
I think if I worked in that setting where I heard it ALL the time I’d probably hate Christmas by the time it rolled around – LMAO!
I’m so with you on those songs, too Nancy! Ugh!! A station needs to have the right kind of Christmas mix to make it palatable. Personally, I can only handle it about a week and a half before and a week after Christmas Day. A few years of doing the Christmas format did that to me.:)
No, I’m not in advertising. I’m in radio. If I were a client, I would be bothered by it, that’s for sure. It’s not the people who you spent dollars on to come to your business, the core audience of the station. Although, perhaps there can be a few new people who will patronize a place because they went over to the Christmas station, but typically, they don’t. They only want their Christmas music.
Yeah, a station gets the hit for the month of Nov/Dec, but then those people who sampled don’t stay around for after Christmas. They go back to where they came from. Which is why I don’t want our station to ever go all Christmas, just to appease a few people who won’t stay and piss off the core audience to do so. But, I don’t get to make the decisions.
Thanks for your input Nancy. Anybody else? What do you think about the Christmas tunes?
Darlene, I have had my own issues with cell phones recently.
I got mine a little bit wet on an amusement park ride and it stopped working. It’s an i-phone and I am no where near the end of my contract, so I was a little bit panicked. Luckily, Apple has a policy to fix it or replace it with a refurbished phone for $200. Not money I wanted to spend, but considering my options, I was grateful. Then the other day, I managed to somehow drop it in my driveway and my neighbor found it. Let’s just say I am not feeling very responsible right now, but I guess things could have been worse.
Hope everyone who has plans (Jasmin, Nancy, etc.) has a great Halloween!
Anyone else like roasted pumpkin seeds? They are my favorite part of Halloween.
As for Christmas music, I love it, but agree an around-the-clock format is a bit much. It’s really not on my radar until after Thanksgiving. That said, I can listen to Ave Maria any time!
Anya, I don’t care for roasted pumpkin seeds. I am a crazy for sunflower seeds.
Christmas music? Today is Halloween! But, yes, anytime past Thanksgiving, I’m for lots of it. It’s only once a year and it keeps me in the mood. I know I’m in the minority , but I hate Springsteen’s “Santa Clause Is Coming To Town”. I change the station.
Yeah, a station gets the hit for the month of Nov/Dec, but then those people who sampled don’t stay around for after Christmas
Theresa, that’s exactly what I do.
I am such an imperfect parent. We have been doing so much other stuff that the pumpkin fell by the wayside. We have always painted them since that was easiest for her. This year I was going to help her carve one. It has been a fun holiday for us though.
Don’t forget to set your clocks and FALL BACK tonight. LOL, the common clocks I use went back an hour automatically last week. That was for the old date, I didn’t catch it and we missed my daughter’s swim class. I was so surprised when I got in the car and it was suddenly an hour later.
She got to go to an open swim instead.
Hope everyone is having a safe and fun Halloween!
I carved the pumpkin to have a Jack-o-lantern for Halloween, but also to get the seeds for roasting. We all have bellyaches the day after Halloween. Most of us from eating too many candy bars. My husband’s bellyache is from too many roasted seeds. Yes, Anya, we love them if they are lightly salted.
I love pumpkin seeds (roasted some today!) but hate sunflower seeds. I really like Halloween because I consider it sort of the kick-off to the holiday season (though it doesn’t begin in earnest until after Thanksgiving).
I definitely think it’s too early for Christmas tunes (another after-turkey-day thing for me), though I do love them. Well, most of them. I tend to like the religious ones more than the secular ones, and if I never hear Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer again, it’ll be too soon. My fave is probably O Come Emmanuel.
I saw egg nog in the grocery store last week. I love egg nog, but it’s too soon.
Hope everyone had an awesome Halloween! We have lots of candy left over.
I usually don’t like Christmas tunes until Thanksgiving, but I think I wouldn’t mind this year. The dark evenings need some cheer.
I love the religious Christmas tunes better than the secular ones. I do love my Bing Crosby, though.
I read the blurb at the top and see that there are specific questions on this thread.
I did participate in the local Breast Cancer Walk. It was pouring and cold, but 1,000s showed up anyway. One of my daughters planned to run it (while I walked) but she had the flu. My younger daughter took her shirt and number and walked it with me. She’s keeping the shirt. Her sister agrees that, walking in that awful weather, she earned it.
We have a Canal festival here locally and it was postponed for weather. They had it instead last weekend and it was really beautiful. The pumpkin ice cream is my favorite part. The leaves in PA were the most beautiful we’ve seen in a few years. I think all the rain we had this summer helped. We’ve had about 4 stunning weeks now.
I see this thread is a bit slower, though not dead, but dead compaired to the Gosselin Chatter where I usually hang our. I found it intriguing tonight to review my week, though not dead, but dead by compairson to to a few years ago when life seemed brighter. Life has been filled with which one of our jobs is in the newspaper today for the last year. Which one is laying off this week and how is your company bankruptcy playing out? My husband and I both work for the largest employers in our county, but not sure how much longer we can hang on. We both are supervisors, which seems to be an easy mark these days, not big money executives, but middle management. Isn’t it always middle management that goes?
As I watched the morning news this morning they were talking about the local Food Drive. The discussion was about canned goods, quick fix meals for those families with teens, and vegtables. I have to be honest, I have the best intentions but am not faithful with my donations. The news went on to talk about paper products, how it was a luxury for toilet paper and paper towels to be on the shelves for families to have avaliable. For some reason, that got to me…… I could see women, just like me shopping the shelves of the local food pantry picking up a roll of Bounty paper towels along with a meal for their family. I blow through paper towels like nothing. I thought, seriously, well yes, I see it I can’t live or clean or wipe things up without my paper towels. Suddenly I felt vulnerable like I’d never felt before during the challenges of the car industry (hubby) and health care (myself).
Sure I’ve been trying to narrow Christmas gifts down to one or two items for the kids, something simple for hubby and what can I make my employees and my mother who has everything so I won’t put a single thing on my credit card. I just seemed to be on a mental mission that turned to a full mission as I scanned my pantry for what I could give to the shelves of the local food pantry. I usually shop in bulk at our local Sams Club. I grabbed a 12 pack of green beans, a 12 pack of tomato sauce, a package of pasta that had 6 wrapped boxes, all the tuna we had, my son’s favorite Ramen Noodles box of 12, and 15 cans of soup. I looked over to the gigantic pack of paper towels and pulled the whole thing off the shelf. I needed 3 boxes and a few extra arms to carry it all up from the basement. My husband looked at me and said, “that’s all of our paper towels”. I looked at him and said, “yes, it is, this could be us next year”. I think he got it, he just picked up the big multi pack of paper towels and stuffed them in my trunk.
If you have it, donate to your local food bank, if you don’t I hope you find a luxury roll of Bounty paper towels.
I see this probably wasn’t the place to post that… but it’s still on my mind.
Kat I think it is the proper place to post and thank you for your post because it is so important to stop and think about those less fortunate and helping them. A lot of people say “oh, someone else will help”. I wish people would not have that attitude.
I really identified with the “it could be us” statement. The majority of us could very well be on the opposite end of those pantries.
I was able to participate in a local food drive a few weeks ago, and I met a lot of people who came down because “that was me a few years ago”. Quite a few people said that. I was thinking about that a lot on my way home, and not only prayed for all those who’ll be helped and those who helped by brinigng food and supplies, but those who have yet to realize that they can help. Their hearts need to be touched.
Kat, thank you. I think your words will touch people’s hearts. It did your husband’s. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday.
Kat, thanks for the reminder. I have a number of items I’ve been meaning to donate. Because I’m lazy, I’ve gotten in the habit of ordering online and having my groceries delivered by Safeway. Often you can get free delivery if your order is over a certain dollar amount (that’s not usually a problem) and if you buy 5 or 6 qualifying products. Sometimes the items on the product list are things I need, but often I find myself scanning for the cheapest thing to qualify for the free delivery. As a result, I have a ton of pasta and some canned beans that I really don’t need and may never get around to using. This reminds me that I should just put this stuff in a bag in my car and look for the chance to drop it off in a donation bin. It also reminds me that it wouldn’t kill me to order a few extra items each time I shop online just for the purposes of donating. I think it’s a timely reminder, so I appreciate it.
Kat, thanks for the reminder. “It could be us” is a good reason to help out those we can in the ways we are able. Sharing paper towels is great I love that. It’s difficult to think of women struggling for basic needs. It’s also so sad to think of those children who don’t have anything to open. I used to like to hear the letters to Santa that Johny Carson would read from children in need. So many of the times, they were asking for a gift for someone else. I think I will see if our post office is doing something like that this season. They had wishes you could fulfill last year.
We will be doing a simpler holiday. Some of my friends have seen some better days than what they are currently dealing with. We will still have a wonderful holiday even if we give simple gifts. I am blessed with wonderful friends and family. I have had some unexpected expenses come up (in a good way) and so, most of my gifts will be baked goodies. I just made a two pre-holiday practice batches of fudge last night
Just to make sure I got it right of course.
Kat, thanks again, I appreciate your words.
