A round-up of some of the stories happening in our Imperfect World.
Rep. John Murtha Passes Away at 77
HARRISBURG, Pa. – Rep. John Murtha, the former Marine who became the voice of veterans on Capitol Hill and later a prominent critic of the Iraq War, died Monday. He was 77. The Pennsylvania Democrat had been suffering from complications from gallbladder surgery. He died at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va., with his family at his bedside, the hospital said.
East Coast Digs out after Weekend Storms (and Braces for More)
A new winter storm is expected to hit the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, says Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth.
Police: Man tries to buy crack with credit card
FLINT, Mich. – Authorities said a man accused of stealing a car then reporting it stolen remains in custody after telling police he was robbed at gunpoint while trying to buy crack cocaine with a credit card. The Flint Journal said the man reported Thursday night that a 2003 Chevy Malibu had been stolen.
How did you feel about Murtha? Has your region of the country been impacted by the recent storms? Do you have a stupid criminal story to contribute? Please share.

How do you pay for cocaine with a credit card? How would the charge show up on your statement??? Why would you tell the cops that?
As far as the snow- I live on the coast now so no matter how much my child wishes for snow- it almost never happens. My parents on the other hand have had more than their share- a foot just last week and now more to deal with tonight. My mom is seriously talking about moving “off the mountain”.
I have to say I know very little about Mr. Murtha. Sounds like he was a great advocate for veterans.
Murtha didn’t really come on my radar until the last few years when he became a critic of the Iraq War. I was interested in his perspective as a relatively conservative Democrat who was actually a veteran. In reading some of the obits, it sounds like he marched to his own drummer which I always respect – e.g., pro-life, but also pro-stem cell research. Apparently, he was the first veteran of the Vietnam War elected to Congress and he had been in the House since 1974. My condolences to his family.
No snow days for us!
I’m kind of upset because I’d like an excuse to stay home and make some of Lily’s potato soup. Lily – please post the recipe if you get a chance.
Still shaking my head at our stupid criminal story.
Murtha seemed to be a man of integrity, which is rare enough in our political climate.
Did I understand that the guy not only tried to pay for cocaine with a credit card but reported a car stolen that he himself had stolen? I think he needs to be locked up for his own protection because obviously he’s a bit challenged by everyday life.
I wouldn’t mind a snow day…
Bring on the snow here in Los Angeles. The whole city would have to shut down and we could all stay home.
I feel for all of the mid westerners and east coasters. It has been a long, cold, hard winter and it is not over yet. I hope you all get some relief real soon.
It appears that Rep. Murtha should be remembered for a great deal more than his opposition to the Iraq war.
It does seem that there was a blip on his record back in 1980 but apparently that was resolved. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Pam, thanks for the additional information on Murtha. I read some bio’s of him quickly, but missed that he had a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.
My husband sat for 10 hours on an Interstate closed by the governor because of the snow. As soon as the Department of transportation (DOT) cleared, salted, and cindered the hill, another inch had fallen. Tractor trailers in the only cleared lane were just stuck. He never made it home that night, but stayed at a hotel nearby. I was a nervous wreck, but he was calm and warm. He complained only of boredom. He’s travelled for over 12 hours in an airplane and said that is much worse. At least in the snow you can take a walk and chat with other motorists, share news and food, call home, breathe fresh air.
