R for disturbing violent content, some nudity and language

This is a movie that starts out trying REALLY HARD to be scary, creepy and haunting. The sound track beats you over the head with it’s THE PART COMING UP IS SCARY – FEEL THE TENSION BUILDING?! FEEL IT!!! I hate it when they’re heavy handed with the score, I don’t like being emotionally manipulated (ex-husband number 2, I’m lookin’ at you!) This was the first thing I noted about the movie. Not off to a great start.

Leonardo DiCaprio spends a lot of time looking confused and/or constipated. Apparently, he’s been studying lately at the Rob Pattinson school of acting. However, in this movie, it actually works. It IS confusing, and just gets more and more so. Also, prison food is probably not high in fiber. Way to method act, Leo!

Mark Ruffalo- did you know he was in this? Yeah, he has a REALLY big part. Barely even see him in the trailers. Losers. He is AWESOME! He is everything this movie needs, and by the end you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. He is probably one of the most under-appreciated actors of our generation. Love him.

What can I say about Ben Kingsley – the man played Gandhi. Gifted actor. Under-utilized. Convincing. Weirds me out just a bit. Appropriately so. Great casting. He should be in every movie ever made. Like Tommy Lee Jones and Alan Rickman (and Brendan Fraser!)

I didn’t think I’d like this movie, between my noN-love of Leo and the in-your-face score, I was all set up to rip the heck out of it. Guess what? It gets GOOD! Real good. Like, oh my gosh I did NOT see that one coming, GOOD!! And I figured out the “twist” in the Sixth Sense like in the first 10 minutes. I totally did not have a clue with the twists and turns this movie takes! Scorsese is genius. I know this is not a revelation. The way it unfolds and reveals itself is a joy and pleasure. This is a thriller/mystery/who-dun-it and you don’t even realize how or why!

My overall review: one of the best thrillers I’ve seen in a long time. A great date movie, your guy will appreciate it after you tortured him with your Valentine’s Day pick!
