Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

By Tiffany

Opened February 12, 2010 | Runtime: 2 hr. 0 min.
PG for action violence, some scary images, peril, mild language and suggestive material

Welcome to Harry Potter, the Greek Gods edition. Unlike my much beloved (and slightly obsessed with) HP, I’m not familiar with the series of books this is based on. So I had to take it at face value. I can’t tell you how accurate it is, how true to the book, or what, if anything, was changed/left-out/thrown-in/etc…

Tooth Fairy

Tooth Fairy

By Tiffany Tweedie

Opened January 22, 2010 | Runtime: 1 hr. 42 min.
PG for mild language, some rude humor and sports action

Synopsis: Dwayne “no longer The Rock” Johnson is Derek Thompson, an aging hockey star nicknamed The Tooth Fairy for his “gift” at hitting opponents so hard, he knocks their teeth out (we are shown this in the movie’s opening segment.) He doesn’t believe in fairy tales, Santa Claus, hopes or dreams. He is dating a woman (Ashley Judd) who does. She has two children and when he tries to tell her 6 year old that there is no Tooth Fairy there’s a problem. And he then receives an official “summons” from Toothfairyland for being a killer of dreams and is sentenced to two weeks serving as, of course, the “real” Tooth Fairy. Or one of them. There are like LEGIONS (another movie I also hope to review in the next week. Love that Paul Bettany…. but I digress…) Anyway, Julie Andrews is the head Fairy or Fairy Godmother or whatever. She’s lovely. And the movie goes on from there…

The Lovely Bones

By Tiffany Tweedie

Opened January 15, 2010 | Run time: 2 hr. 15 min.
PG-13 for mature thematic material involving disturbing violent content and images, and some language

I should preface all this by saying I did not read the book, though I was very much aware of it. In fact, I deliberately did not read this book. A book about a child being kidnapped, molested and murdered, hum…. no thanks! I have a vivid enough imagination without literary help, thanks anyway!

Extraordinary Measures

By Tiffany

Opens January 22, 2010 | Runtime: 1 hr. 46 min.
PG for thematic material, language and a mild suggestive moment

Indiana Jones and the hunk from The Mummy have joined forces to battle:

a) the Undead
b) Nazis
c) a rare genetic disorder

Option C – yes, really!

Based on a true story (don’t those ALWAYS get to you?!) Brendan Fraser is John Crowley, a successful business man, and devoted husband and father. Two of his children suffer from Pompe a very rare, fatal disease. It’s so rare, that no drug has been developed to treat it. Enter Indiana Jones…. er… Harrison Ford as Dr. Robert Stonehill. A research scientist who has a theory, a very good one as a matter of fact. And the race against time begins…

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes

By Tiffany

Opened December 25, 2009 | Runtime: 2 hr. 14 min.
PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some startling images and a scene of suggestive material

I can in all honestly say, this is not your mother’s Sherlock Holmes!! At least, not my mother’s. She and my stepdad went to see it and didn’t much care for it (and they love action-adventure movies.) My mom said she thought it was weird, hard to follow, and didn’t really come together til the end. Well, that last part is actually true to the original Sherlock Holmes. But not much else is.

It’s Complicated

By Tiffany

Opened December 25, 2009 | Runtime: 1 hr. 54 min.
Rated R for sexuality and some drug content

This is one of the best “adult” comedies I’ve seen in a very long time. It’s raucous and rowdy, brassy and bawdy, without being crass, sophomoric and, well, stupid. The writing is top-notch and the plot is not just plausible, but very relate-able. There are twists and turns, and the ending probably isn’t what you’re expecting. At several points, the audience was laughing so hard you couldn’t hear the rest of the scene’s dialogue!

PG-13: warfare, intense battle sequences, some smoking, sensuality and language

OMG – seriously OH MY GOODNESS!! It sounds so cliche to say “this movie is like nothing I’ve ever seen!” But it totally is LIKE NOTHING I’VE EVER SEEN!!

Everybody’s Fine

By Tiffany

Opened December 4, 2009 | Runtime: 1 hr. 35 min.
PG-13: thematic elements and brief strong language

Setup: Robert De Niro is a widower who’s kids all last minute cancel on a planned family get-together at home. So he packs up and heads out across the country by train and bus (he doesn’t fly) to see why. It’s billed as a dramedy, but it’s much heavier on the drama and all the comedic moments are really in the trailer.
