I have been resisting this one for the very reasons you list at the beginning of your review, but I also think I should see it. Hopefully, it will win the Oscar and I will overcome my doubts. Not for the faint of heart. We watched it and then watched "She's just not into you" or whatever it's called. After watching that movie it made me wish I could send the whole cast over to Iraq to assist the guys in The Hurt Locker. I hope it wins the Oscar. Great movie. Not for the faint of heart.
