I love a good sitcom but I am a bit of snob. I want them to be well acted with great writing so I can enjoy and let my mind completely relax. I know that’s a lot to expect from a half hour of television. I have missed some great series by automatically dismissing them for a preconceived notion. I never watched Frasier or Will and Grace until I was put on bed rest during my last pregnancy. I discovered what I had been missing when I would leave the TV on after some other show.
I had never bothered to watch Frasier because I knew Kelsey Grammer couldn’t follow Cheers. I remember seeing tabloid headlines claiming there was arguing over how much of a part the dog played. I thought the show must be incredibly stupid and tuned it out. I can’t believe I deprived myself of David Hyde Pierce all those years. He’s fantastic. The writing on some of the shows is pure genius.
I had also completely ignored Everybody Loves Raymond. I was helping my mother out after some surgery and she watched it a couple of times each day. I had no idea that Doris Roberts or Peter Boyle were in it. I have always liked both of them. Now, I like to watch it every day.
I like to watch the reruns of these shows because they’re just want I want them to be. I can really relax when I sit down to watch them. I do like Everybody Loves Raymond, but it’s not in my top five. Frasier is up there near the top. What are the top five sitcoms that you will never get tired of watching?

My all time favorite is I Love Lucy. It is a classic show. When my youngest daughter was 5, she asked, “who is that funny lady”. Every once and a while my now 11 and 16 year old daughter will set down and watch an episode. It is good, clean wholesome entertainment and it is still a great show.
This one is a tough one for me. To just pick five.
I loved the show Roseanne although in later years I did not like Roseanne Barr much.
I loved Mash.
Everybody Loves Raymond is the best.
I absolutely love, love, love Men of a Certain Age
Seinfeld
But I will be back because there are so many more.
I did love I Love Lucy so much growing up. This is just too hard, LOL.
Here are my top five:
5. The Munsters
4. Taxi
3. The Andy Griffith Show
2. The Honeymooners
1. Seinfeld
I left out some other favorites I loved but these are the best. None of the current sitcoms hold a candle to the oldies, in my opinion.
My top five:
1. Will and Grace
2. Mary Tyler Moore
3. The Golden Girls
4. Mash
5. Cheers
Also liked All in the Family, I Love Lucy, and The Cosby Show, and The Addams Family. Five was hard for me!
Two and half men
Golden Girls
Happy Days (loved all the characters)
Laverne & Shirley
Andy Griffin
So many more… I still enjoy watching the “oldies”
Seinfeld
30 rock
The Office
Cheers
The Bob Newhart Show
Mary Tyler Moore
(I needed an extra slot.)
Barney Miller
Taxi
Why isn’t this top ten?
We will make it Top 10 just for you, Ann.
Well, you know me, the rule follower, who needs the rules changed. So I still have two more…
It’s so funny this topic came up because last night my husband, my Son(who is 24), and I were watching reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond. We watched a few of them and they were so funny and relatable! I love that show because I see so many family members in the show, and it really makes us laugh.
I still like Seinfeld, loved Mary Tyler Moore and All in the Family.
I don’t know if it is considered a sitcom, but my favorite show is still Sex and the City. I’ve seen every episode over and over and find alot of the writing, especially the “one liners” to be very clever.
I think I need to do two lists: current shows and defunct shows. A lot of older comedies get kind of dated (for me at least) quickly – so I have to grade them based on what I thought of them at the time, or my list would be all new shows.
Old/canceled shows:
1) Newhart
2) Roseanne
3) Arrested Development
4) Friends
5) Seinfeld
Current:
1) Parks and Rec
2) 30 Rock
3) Community
4) Modern Family
5) The Office
I have four that I consider my favourite because I know almost every episode of each one:
4. Roseanne
3. Friends
2. Three’s Company
1. Seinfeld
I remember when people were raving about Everybody Loves Raymond and I just didn’t get into it not because it wasn’t good. I just for whatever reason never watched an episode.
The same thing with Glee. My friend keeps telling me I should watch it (like the book thing) but either it’s on at a time I’m not available or when I see it on the guide, I just don’t feel like checking it out.
I think the only sitcom I currently watch is Modern Family.
I like Jennie’s idea of 2 lists. It makes it easier to decide. Ann can take a deep breath and not worry about breaking the rules.
Newhart (the one where he runs the Inn in Vermont) is one of my top 5. There’s so many good older shows but I’m thinking Arrested Development also has to hit my list.
I’m still thinking about the rest.
Teresa E. I haven’t caught Glee. I do want to watch it. I feel like I’m missing something really good.
Teresa E says…The same thing with Glee. My friend keeps telling me I should watch it (like the book thing) but either it’s on at a time I’m not available or when I see it on the guide, I just don’t feel like checking it out.
I totally agree. I still haven’t checked it out because of the reasons you list. Also, I really don’t need another show to watch. If it’s on this summer, I may give it a try because I do feel “left out” lol.
I like Jennie’s idea, but I will stick with shows that have departed for now:
1. Rosanne
2. Seinfeld
3. Malcolm in the Middle
4. Arrested Development
5. King of Queens (just cause I heart Kevin James)
Any Newhart show could have easily made my top five too.
I had to really think about this, so here goes:
1. Seinfeld
2. The Andy Griffith Show
3. Colonel Flack
4. The Honeymooners
5. Gomer Pyle
Colonel Flack is a little-known British 50s comedy about a con man and his sidekick. I just couldn’t get enough of it.
Ooh, I didn’t think of British shows! I’m not a big aficianado of British sitcoms, but I did love the Blackadder series.
I don’t watch very much TV but the one show I miss & still enjoy watching is Seinfeld. Even the episodes I’ve seen many times make me laugh. I keep meaning to watch Glee, but always seem to miss it, my sister says it’s really well done & funny.
I came up with mine:
Frasier
News Radio
Mary Tyler Moore
Roseanne
Designing Women (this would be where Arrested Development would go, but there’s not enough of them and I have watched them a lot)
Cheating Below
I love Malcolm In The Middle. Anya, it was pretty creative. The running gag w/the hamster was hilarious. I thought all the boys were great actors and very believable. The child that played Dewie was great.
Spin City
I will always love I Love Lucy – my fav is when they go to Hollywood. I love seeing the old stars that were on it w/them.
Twilight Zone – although that’s not a sitcom
Oh, I love Malcolm in the Middle, too. I was a Reese & Lois fan.
Lily, I just saw those I Love Lucy in Hollywood reruns on Sunday. Usually we have Animal Planet and Food Tv on in the background on Sunday. Someone found Lucy so we watched. It must have been a marathon. I still laugh out loud at Ethel in Alburqurque. So ridiculous.
