Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina, has admitted that his recent “disappearance” was due to infidelity. His name has been thrown around as a possibility for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. In a press conference yesterday he publicly apologized.
Is an apology enough?

I can honestly say that I don’t care about politician’s affairs. If
I’m not married to the guy, it’s none of my business. I can understand
some people taking it into account as a “morality” issue, but I don’t
generally view human sexual behavior as a moral issue. I view someone
hurting his wife and family as a moral issue, but again, the commitment
wasn’t to me, and infidelity is a common enough human failing that I’m
not that shocked and appalled by it. I kind of wish we as a society
would quit clutching our pearls over such behavior.
But the whole “disappearing and going to a foreign country and then
lying about it” thing – in my mind, that’s grounds for resignation.
It’s just extremely erratic behavior for someone who is, after all, in
a position of pretty great responsibility. I don’t care about the
apology one way or another, but I do think Gov. Sanford should resign.
I agree with Jennie. The least of his sins as a governor was having an
affair. That is a personal issue that has little bearing on his
ability to lead S.C. His decision to lie to his staff about where he
would be and essentially disappearing for a week…that is much more
troubling.
At least Gov. Sanford indicated he had real feelings for the other
woman. I’m pretty sure most of the other guys in a similar position
lately (e.g. John Edwards) referred to the other woman as an “error in
judgment”. If one is going to break one’s marriage vows, at least let
it be for a real emotional connection with another person and not a
minor itch one needed to scratch.
I found
it interesting in the press conference that Gov. Sanford said he was
sorry for hurting his mistress and a few other people before he said
his wife. However, I just read that he and his wife had been separated
for several weeks.
I agree that he should resign based on the info that he in essence
abandoned his position for five days and if insiders knew where he was,
they were not talking. That would not be a politician that I would want
in office as head of my state let alone my country.
What is it with these men? There were other ways to handle this. I just do not get it.
Another politician cheating on his wife. This is getting so hum-drum.
I never think much of politicians anyway, if they’re not breaking promises in one place, they are breaking them in another.
Yesterday
I almost cheered when Cokie Roberts said on Good Morning America how
she was glad that Mrs. Sanford wasn’t standing there next to her
husband, “wearing pearls like they always do… and saving their
husbands’ political career.”
Yeah, this is bigger news because the guy freakin’ liked to everyone
about leaving the freakin’ country. What if there’d been a state
emergency of some kind?
I
guess I just will never understand the level of ego. I found it
troubling that on Father’s Day he is away from his boys and with his
girlfriend. I agree that it is their personal life but I wonder if
they don’t care about their own family unit, how are they caring about
the duties they are charged with and their ability to executive for the
best interest of the office(s) they were elected to. I wonder what are
they capable of if a foreign entity bribed an elected official about
what on the outside seemed like a personal matter that is no ones
business – where does that politician draw the line on doing what is
right versus protecting their self-interest. Marilyn
Eydie, I totally agree that it was refreshing to not have to see Jenny Sanford “standing by her man” ala poor Silda Spitzer.
The more I see of this Mark Sanford the more I think he is a
self-indulgent man-child and a tad weird. Anyone know much about him
prior to this event?
Marilyn, good point that he missed Father’s Day to be with his girlfriend. Yuck!
He should resign.
This is a big country. Can’t we find decent people to do these jobs?
