I was reading an article in Parenting Magazine entitled “31 Ways Moms Can Indulge.”
Some of my favorites were:
- If it’s a chilly evening, toss your pj’s briefly in the dryer before you put them on.
- Get up a little early, make yourself a latte, and surf the web in complete silence.
- Instead of spending a weekend morning slaving over laundry, drop off five days’ worth at the laundromat. It’s a cheap thrill that’ll probably cost less than $30.
Some things were “splurge” things like hiring a handyman for a day, going for a massage and upgrading to 500-thread-count sheets (I don’t think I ever knew the count went so high!).
Nevertheless, it was a fun piece to read and fortunately there is an online version to follow along.
I treat myself to a Starbuck’s café mocha and a pedi at a tiny little strip mall spa every other week when my toddler is at school! It’s a great way to unwind and catch up on some morning TV.
I also LOVE linens – Home Goods is my home away from home! And, although they aren’t 500-thread-count, you can get a great set of 310-count Turkish cotton sateen sheets for about $30-50 there! Oh, so worth the money!
Please share your indulgences with us – whether a “splurge” or “on the cheap!”

Any chance they would be willing to put it away for me too? I’ll give them $40.
I love these ideas. I am someone who appreciates the little pleasures in life more than the big extravanganzas anyway, so this is right up my alley.
I love the pedi idea too. I probably only get to do it every 3-4 weeks, but it makes me feel better about myself and I get to read while getting my feet prettied up. All for $20 bucks. Great deal.
I recently started getting my hair colored at a day spa vs. a traditional salon. It’s an expensive habit I may not be able to keep up (I only went because I had a gift certificate to spend), but it is a really relaxing experience and if I had money to blow, I could so easily spend the whole day there getting a massage, along with all their other wonderful services. It’s fun to dream about anyway!
I just noticed the picture that went with this article. LMAO. That is beyond adorable.
How is the day spa color experience different Anya? I’m intrigued.
I got a mani/pedi last Saturday- the pedicure was worth it. The hands- not so much. It was chipped and peeling in less than 24 hrs and its not like I had been rock climbing.
I went to one of my best friend’s 40th birthday party with no husband and kids. For me, that’s a big deal. I don’t know the last time I went to a social engagement where I just got to be me – not wife and/or mom. It felt sort of wierd. But I ate some delicious fondue and had a couple glasses of wine and enjoyed myself. I stayed out until 12:30! That’s late for me. Then I had to go home because my boobs were going to explode. I’m nursing a five month old. I was hesitant at first to leave all the kids for the time but I’m glad I did.
I would LOVE to try the laundromat thing, but I’m so darn picky about my clothes! I guess I could put together everything I know doesn’t need to be treated for stains, etc. What a Godsend that would be to have EVERYTHING done! Laundry is really never ever done though I’ve learned!

Way to go, girl! I am glad you got some time for yourself. I am sure that doesn’t come easy with little ones at home (or even older ones). Wine + fondue =
Samantha – what I like about this particular spa are the little touches. Cucumber water – yum! Soft piano music vs. bad 90′s pop tunes in the background, etc. etc. It happens to be in a really pretty old Victorian style hotel nestled in the hills. There was nothing wrong where I went before, this is just a bit sweeter and more relaxing. Jennie can fill you in more – I dragged her along and now she is hooked!
Nancy – I am picky too about my clothes. I think I would spend so much time “getting ready” to drop off the clothes, it might not be worth it. LOL.
Anya,
YES! And then as I was ironing some tee-shirts today (yes, you read that right), I thought, geez, I would probably be “unfolding” it all just to press it smooth! LOL!
I have given myself permission to spend one day a week doing what I want to do. Usually its reading or going to the movies but it is me time! With an empty nest for the school term I figured I was worth it. lol
I just filled out my retirement papers. That is about the biggest indulgence one can do at the age of 54.
I like Pam’s indulgence best. I can’t afford it yet.
Still thinking….
I am not a mani/pedi/salon-type.
Still thinking…
Paula, “me time.” Perfect. Yes, you are most definitely worth it.
Pam, you know how happy I am for you. I have got to start that calendar I was talking about.
Ann, we need to find something for you. I know you enjoy your puppy time, but you have to share her. We need something just for Ann.
Teresa E. I’m so happy for you. I love those times. Those are rare for me too. At the beginning of the month, my girlfriend and I went shopping at the thrifts and had a great lunch out. It was so nice not to be tending to someone else during the meal and be able to yak. We had a great time.
That makes me happy.
Pam, Congratulations on your upcoming retirement. I am counting down with you.
Having your laundry done rocks. I recommend it. It’s wonderful to pick it up all clean, fluffy, folded and ready to be put away.

Me too. It’s important to be good to ourselves all the time. It’s hard to remember in all the scurry. I appreciate and enjoy myself after my little one’s bedtime and watch all the grown up tv I want. I always take a couple of time each day to chill, have a cup of tea and check out IW.
My splurge is prob eating out once a month. Has been for a long time. Something really good that someone else cooks and brings to my table. No dishes..
I love that pic. That so funny.
Oh, Lily, that’s it, no cooking! That is such treat. This week, I’ll be going out with two girlfriends and there will be maragaritas!
Last night I recieved a call from my neighbor who moved away asking if I wanted to go to a Steeler game. Woohoo!! It’s really nice a bus trip and I get to spend a night in Pittsburgh. I think hubby is a bit disapointed but I looking foward to a girl’s weekend away:)
This day is just getting better and better! One of my online friends that I have met just inivited me down to Florida to see the Steelers and Tampa Bay. This way I get to take hubby to another game and we see some beach to boot. Plus I have never gone to a away game and Tampa has a cool stadium.
Life is awesome today !
I think if I could I would do some splits like they do on DWTS:)
Congratulatins Diane!
I love football too. This will be a great trip for you. I will try and do some splits also. Ok, maybe not. I need to finish this work year out without any injury and I am afraid that would do me in for several months.
Well – I did one of these and am SO excited!

Because my hubby works out daily and wears a uniform to work, it seems I can’t ever get caught up with laundy. I’ve tried almost every system in the book and to no avail.
So yesterday after looking at the HUGE heap next to the washer, I decided to try the above suggestion. I gathered about 50lbs of stuff – t-shirts, uniforms, shorts, socks, etc. and hauled them off to a nearby laundromat that offers drop-off service. Well, she did the most AWESOME job! I spent more like $50, but EVERYTHING that belongs to my hubby is now CLEAN, folded, hung, etc.
This was a huge accomplishment for me because I’m super picky about laundry. Next to me, I only trust my Mom to do a good job with folding, hanging, treating, etc. “Erin,” my new BFF at the laundromat ROCKED! It looks like my hubby’s work shirts have been dry-cleaned – all wrapped in plastic! The t-shirts are all folded just like I do it – all stacked up by color and bagged in clear plastic!
Not that I plan to make this a regular thing, BUT this is an AWESOME thing to do for yourself! So glad I did it!
Nancy, good for you. It’s especially nice when you’ve gotten behind like that. Poof! Wonderful laundry. Glad you did that for yourself.
