A yellow lab named Reagan brought quite the surprise home to its owner a little over 3 months ago. Reagan found a bag of Meow Mix on the side of a country road in Iowa. The bag was sealed and had been run over by the local traffic.
Reagan gave its owner the bag and whined until she opened it. Reagan’s owner was shocked when she did open it. There were two kittens barely alive covered in the remains of the rest of the kittens from the litter that did not survive. The owner promptly called the Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary.
“It was gruesome, quite gruesome because the kittens; there was a litter of 4 or 5 of them and you couldn’t tell if there were 2 or 3 in the bag because they had been run over by a vehicle. It was not a pretty sight,” says Linda Blakely of the Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary.
The kittens, now named Skipper and Tipper, survived thanks to their hero, Reagan and the great fostering done by the Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary. “The instinct of the dog was to nurture and not kill the kittens. With all the blood some dogs would have responded to the scent. Reagan the dog is a hero,” says Blakely.
Skipper and Tipper, known as the “bag” kittens, are ready for adoption.

Wow – what a story!
First why would someone get rid of unwanted pets by leaving them in a bag by the road? It would have been more humane to kill them all.
What a wonderful pet that dog is…and smart too! I have a brand new yellow lab puppy. I hope she has the same instincts.
I so wish I could adopt these two little ones. It’s nice that this story has a nice ending. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like the monster who did this will be caught.
So awful. I don’t understand abandoning animals, much less putting them somewhere to be run over. Those poor kitties.

I love the two that survived – I am a sucker for a tabby (I have two myself, sisters). Yellow labs do seem to be among the sweetest of dog breeds. That dog truly is awesome.
Well the outcome is a feel good story. Love it when animals help each other out. I am positive these little ones will go to a good home and they will probably never want to see another Meow Mix bag again.
I’m sure some nice family will adopt the cuties. Oh pattypie, how fun, enjoy!!
Yes, Pattypie. Congrats on the new puppy!
I have a yellow lab and he is the sweetest pet I have ever had. He’s smart, affectionate and very gentle. He will simply sit and watch my bunnies hop all around him and a couple of times one of my boys, Sammy has hopped right up ON Buddy (the dog). He has never snapped or acted aggressive to the bunnies or the cat. Yes I live in a zoo…..lol 2 teenagers (but usually more with friends over) 4 bunnies, a cat and Buddy the yellow dog. I always love to read about animals helping each other out like Pam said. Very sweet story.
I hope the monster that did this has nightmare.
Oh, how can people be so cruel? I never got to this story and from the comments, I thought Pattypie was writing about her new pup. So happy for you PP.
I remember when I was taking a grooming class, one of the ladies brought in 3 lab/chow pups she had found in a pillow case she saw thrown out of a moving car. The car slowed down enough for them to be okay. It’s so awful. Those fuzzy faces are so innocent.
What a sweet dog. Labs and Retrievers are amazing like that.
